A friend and myself gave it a try yesterday morning. Our dogs combined traveled 33 miles but only turned up one covey. Unless we get another snow event I'm probably done for the season.
It wasn't all a loss, at least we got into a few pheasants around the house last week during the short NM...
Don't discount the dry arroyos through the flats. They are full of desert willow and mesquite cover. I spent two days chasing a bachelor herd in Septemberin that stuff.
While hunting last weekend one herd of 13 deer had five bucks, two of which were very nice. However one huge buck was by himself (and also sprinting for his life). I imagine in a few weeks things might be a little more interesting.
It's generally thought the rut in that corner of the world ramps up after Thanksgiving, specifically early December.
Last year I watched a buck harass a hot doe on December 3rd but saw several other groups of does with no bucks around.
I feel like you and I hunt the same units lol. Good luck...
This! Maintaining a good attitude in the face of extreme frustration is a must.
We just successfully tagged a bull last week in the last hour of the last day after five days of frustration. We could have thrown in the towel that afternoon when we watched the dense fog roll over the valley but...
My parents tanned the hide of a cow my sister shot last year. Other than the sticker shock ($600) it turned out beautiful. So much so, my fiancé shot her first elk last week and we dropped off that hide for tanning.
Congrats on the bull!
My fiance connected in the last hour on the last day. Thought we might be going home empty handed for the third consecutive year after a front with heavy fog rolled in Wednesday afternoon. To her credit, she stuck it out and the fog eventually broke to find a bull we had...
No report on your muzzleloader hunt, assume no tag punched Swamp? We just got home late last night but the bugling was sporadic throughout the hunt, mainly concentrated around dusk.
Similarly my dad urged me to forgo football. I didn't heed his advice the first year.
One day in practice I was flat out run over by a running back. Next memory I had was lying flat on my back staring at the sky with no recollection of what just happened but I popped up and continued on with...
I can't believe they are still in business. I have a first gen Spot device that lives in the junk bin because I refuse to purchase their antiquated and expensive plans.
