In AZ, first/last light the animals are moving a lot more. But. many keep moving in the 1-2 hours.
For # of animals per minute, nothing beats first/last light.
Felt that way eating Coues deer tags for three years without seeing them. Felt that one year when we filled no tags and saw no elk in a honey hole.
Felt that way my first week of archery hunt this year. It was hot and nothing made a sound.
My small sample size of 4 elk, 2 caribou, 1 mule deer, 3 blacktail, 3 Coues deer shot with my 7mm 180 vld hunters are complete successes. My sample size of 1 Coues and 1 caribou with 25 cal 133 were no different.
I know some use the Berger target bullets with thicker jackets.
I wanna know how...
Keep it simple. A thin wind proof/rain proof outside shell. Then your choice of layering. Solves it all.
Layers let you adjust to temps. Which types of layers you like. Fleece, merino wool, puffy, etc. maybe all of them.
I also like to walk in cold so I don’t sweat out. Of course, I run hot...
We make this sling, it is light and designed to be easy to use. Has the grip fabric that keeps it on your shoulder, but isn’t like the rubber that grabs your sleeve.
Rokslide10 is a code that always saves 10% but if you sign up for the emails, we give 15%. And, if you don’t like it, just lemme...
I run this one, but they make two other models that have heavier legs and are stiffer. Never seen the Fat Boy version, but it looks similar. If I were buying it for your purposes, I would buy for stability and get the largest diameter legs for best stability standing...
Try this. It will wrap over your scope. We get a lot more time hunting Coues glassing into the rising and setting sun.

Get a 2 section tripod with Inverted legs. Very stable and easy to adjust setting up or on the go because the adjustment is always within reach.
Use a plate with bag on top like this for quick adjustment and easy tracking of moving animals. (I make it and it is excellent for quick...
Have you shot off a tripod before?
How far will you be carrying it?
Standing?
Sitting?
Will you put ARCA on your rifle forend?
Do you want to shoot directly off the tripod or off a bag on the tripod?
PRS guys use a big plate or long rail and cowitness scope and binos. I don’t know anyone rhat also uses a bag as well.
I have one that I sometimes set up for shooting at the range. I have a small ball head that I clamp in for bino rangefinder.

Nice, I think there are definitely hunts where that makes sense.
I have been looking at blacktail hunting, and seems like some areas I would leave my tripod and big glass at home.
What sort of terrain are you hunting in?
I am not as confident/comfortable off hand, but so could. Funny that my two closest shots on game, inside 100, still were off a tripod, but the situation put me there. For one, I ran into about 350 and set up on my caribou but they kept feeding closer...
I have used my puffy and other things as support bags. Definitely works. For the 2.5 ounces, I like having it there, easy to grab and consistent. I also use it to kneel on a lot.
Do you take a glassing pad to sit on?
How far do you shoot?
How fast do you need to shoot after ranging?
Those are the two questions I run through. Most choose ballistics in the binos or a Bluetooth to another device.
In the moments before pressing the trigger, IMO, there is a tremendous mental load that should be reduced with...
I like to hear how others figure their load. I have learned a lot.
Here, looks like the difference is personal preference for how we hunt, cause I leave my bipod and spotter at home. Always tradeoffs.
Ultimately, we are at about the same total weight.
