This is where I’m at now. Dave Ferry from Horsewright is building me a knife but that’ll be the last one for a while.
I happen to really enjoy sharpening and regular maintenance on knives and it has been a fun hobby.
After using a shrade old timer for years I have recently been taking a bit of a dive on knives, production, semi-production, and custom. Just out of curiosity, what are your favorite knives for handling upland birds? Favorite steel/blade shape?
Thanks gents!
The last couple years I have been using one of those square ammo crates to keep my stuff organized throughout the seasons.
It’s functional but far from optimal. I chase turkeys, fish, waterfowl, upland, and occasionally go out west for archery elk. It would be nice to have an optimized box...
I only have a season on it. However, I’m in northern MN running through some nasty heavy cover and it looks brand new. I hunted about 30 days last bird season.
Final Rise Legacy for me hunting grouse and pheasants in MN. Holds everything I can need, rides super well, and I can fit as much water as I need for the way I hunt. Couple mile loops through cuts then on to the truck and hit another spot. I have been pleased with my purchase.
I cannot find Sitka’s boxers anywhere on their website. I am hoping they are releasing a new version although the previous generation was my favorite. If it is discontinued I may not emotionally recover. Merino in my eyes is the only way to go but I refuse to purchase any First Lite products as...
For 4K you could get an RFM Zeus with my ideal configurations.. it all depends on what you hunt and what you like. If I were spending 4k on a gun i would either get that Zeus or a Dickinson estate in a 28 gauge and a fair aside .410 SxS for ruffed grouse. If you are in a prairie state or chukar...
Had a banner year at grouse camp.
Ended up shooting a full red phased bird which is in the freezer of my taxidermist. Super stoked to get that one back, best looking bird I have ever taken. Glad the grouse hunting has been so stellar because waterfowl has been absolutely dismal here.
It’s been so busy out here. I personally don’t understand the fascination with trail riding quads, side by sides, or dirt bikes but I was dodging them for hours today. Good day in the woods nonetheless!
It was a zoo out there today. I left one state forest because it was so busy and headed to another. Same thing. I stopped at a new cover I scouted this year and doubled up at the tail end of the walk. Took my 2 birds and went home. Sure feels like the woods have gotten more crowded lately…
Wind resistance + waterproof + insulation are the way to go.
For clothing I run:
Some kind of merino base layer
Sitka Boreal Jacket
Sitka Boreal Hat
Sitka Neck Gaiter
Merino gloves
Hand muff
That system I have paired down from having multiple pieces to fit the same slot from years prior. I also...
