Good call, I grew up in PA hunting whitetails wishing the mountains were a little bit taller. I am lucky that the USAF provided me with the opportunity to experience this part of the world. If I can't get back up here with the military, I will be back in 15 years as a civilian to stay for...
I have spent hundreds of dollars in gas, and millions of calories chasing blackies this year. Me and my best friend tag teamed one in the spring, and I have been solo hunting all fall. I made it to 300 yards today and took a shot. The bear acted as if it was hit, but he took off with no blood...
Awesome!!!! That tundra is no joke. We attempted that hunt with rifles last year and came home empty handed. We made it to 6 miles out and threw in the towel. Beautiful country up there!
Found this little dude in ak, unit 13. He was a couple miles off the highway up as high as the sheep. Our party of 3 was able to pull 2 bulls off of the mountain.
I agree with the guide. You can't fix those nasty trauma wounds with a band-aid. He did the right thing by getting the rescue folks notified as fast as he could.
Just be ready to shoot when you start calling. We called one in last spring and he came in on a freaking mission! I blew on the call for probably 3 minutes, we ended up taking the bear at 7 yards with handguns. I think that when they want to come, they come hard.
That is my exact go-to combo for all of my hunting. Kuiu's stuff is the bee's knee's. It is tough enough to take into the alders, and warm enough for the occasional " Crap, I dont think I'm making it to the tent" kinda nights in the fall. Quiet stuff as well.
I found myself up a tree with out a rifle last spring with a black bear 7 yards away....good thing i had my .44!!!! My Ruger Redhawk or Glock 29 strapped to my chest makes me feel comfortable when I'm busting through the devils club on my way up to a black bear.
