    Wax or treat your boots

I'm on my second pair of Lowa Tibets. The first pair I treated with Obenauf's and had the rand start peeling from the leather creating pockets for dew, rain, and snow to collect. Wore these for five years and still hike in them. Did find a product that worked great to glue the rand back on...

Four things I thought I'd share

jmsdad, I get mine at TAPS Plastics for $1.99. TAP Plastics are located throughout the Bay area and available online. Like you know, works great! Lucky enough to use it on my archery bull this year. Started breaking him down at 9PM and finished at 1PM....solo. Also used the break-off...

    Finally saw some elk!

Here's my take after 5 years of backpack archery hunting. The first year I interpolated from the 10% success that I would need 10 encounters with elk before things went my way and I got a decent shot. This crazy formula has held true over the last four years. This year was 8 encounters with...

Does Lowa make a boot with a wider forefoot?

I have a wide forefoot and narrow heel. Been wearing Tibets for the last five years and in a new pair this year. The wides are just fine but for me I generally to go up a shoe size for boots. Normally wear 11W and the first pair were 12W and were great. Could feel some toe contact with heavy...

    Lightening the Load

I'd leave the rain pants at the truck unless the forecast calls for heavy rain. Gaitors and rain jacket are more than enough and probably won't be used anyway.

Does other gear like clothig play a role in your backpack sleep system?

Some things that help with a lighter bag are: Stay hydrated. Should be peeing once or twice a night. Take along a gator-aid bottle for this. Have a spare base layer for sleeping DRY. Eat enough. Most hunters are in caloric deficit. A good pad. Lots of heat lost sleeping on cold ground...

Why did this work so well?

Last hunt I took a 30 degree MontBell bag and my wife had a 15 degreeMontBell. The night time temps hit 20 as a low and she got cold. I used a really old bivy-goretex top and coated nylon bottom- and slept really warm...even with a condensation issue at the foot of the bag. I've heard that a...

Workouts/Best time to shoot your bow...

My last shots these past two seasons were with a full pack while hiking in for the second week of hunting. I walk a range with steep inclines and shoot with 50# in my pack. Definately not as steady and a heads-up on the distance I can confidently shoot.

Sitka mountain pants vs KUIU attack pants.

I have both and prefer the mountain pants for comfort, knee pads and pocket layout. I've spent a couple of weeks in the attack pants and the material/cut of the pant tears up my hips...I wear the kifaru dt everyday while backpack archery hunting.

Best Small Bag for Duplex Frame

I've used pods with the Duplex frame for the past 3 archery seasons; a large, two mediums and a long pocket on top for hydration bladders/filter. Generally carry enough for 8 days and like the fact that the pods organize my gear: large pod=sleep system, medium=cook kit/food, medium=clothes/etc...

    What degree sleeping bag?

If you have to carry it then the weight is a factor. I use a 1# 6oz bag rated a 30 degrees and have used it Sept/Oct in Wyoming. Definately not warm enough sometimes so on come the socks, long underwear, balaclava, and puffy jacket as needed to be warm. Any clothing that you can comfortably...

September usually neither. October, rain pants.

    Game Bags

For someone averaging one or two animals a year the Alaskan Game Bags work great. $11.00 for four of the 48 inch bags. All four wiegh 7.5 oz....total. Consider them disposable-no clean up. They do have to be used properly, you can't throw your meat into the bag and hang them by the knot in...

    down or synthetic

    For archery season in Wyoming....down...definately.

    Kuiu attack vs sitka ascent

I guess I'm the odd-man-out. I'm 6'2" with a long torso. The guide pants really chew up my hips under my pack belt (Kifaru DT). The GF wears them no problem. The Sitka pants ride a bit higher and are much more comfortable...for me. I change pants when I resupply, generally one week.

How many of you Western Hunters use Whisker Biscuits on your bows?

Didn't read all the posts so someone may have mentioned this already. The passing of a helically fletched arrow through the bristles puts a mechanical spin on the arrow long before the fletching causes the arrow to rotatate as it passes through the air. Not a bad thing with broadheads.

    Wind stopper shirt?

Not sure why more backpack hunters are not using windshirts. I use the Sitka Contrail for Sept archery in Wyoming the last three seasons and it's my favorite jacket for that time of the year...9oz. October deserves a bit more respect and I go with breathable rain gear with pit zips....17oz...

    Best pillow for backpacking?

I like the versitility of using the stuff sack with a fleece lining, extra clothes and puffy down jacket inside. Like sleeping at the Hilton! Last year woke-up cold a few nights and had to put on the jacket to sleep in my 30 degree bag...the pilllow suffered. This year the Mont-Bell down...

OK now help requested on my full load out? Elk Pack for September CO

Looks like a great list with some items to serve as back-up. I would consider the following either/or's: Either-Labrador sweater Or-Puffy jacket--like this for it's versatility, I sleep in mine with 30 degree bag half the time! Either-Spotter(Mule Deer)...
