I did draw the unit I applied for. I’ve hunted around this unit and have glassed into it. I’m going to make a scouting trip in July to work out things like campsite and of course find concentrations of does for November!
From my experience the roads can get pretty bad in Eastern MT, so everything needed to get yourself out of a pinch is a must in my rig. Chains, shovels, Pulaski, traction boards, stuff like that! Should be a great time with your sons, good luck to you all!!
Best of luck, I’ve killed my biggest buck in October even though I’ve had a few November tags. One last thing all bucks are different as to when they will split off from the bachelor herds so if you have a buck scouted out and he’s living in a bachelor herd and then in October you find the...
When I’ve hunted the desert and scouted a lot in the summer I’ve learned that the big bucks will be in relatively the same area that I found them in the summer. Usually they stay in the cover a lot more and aren’t as active but they are in there. Being in position to get a shot when they are...
I’ve put a lot of miles through snow and winter conditions in Pac Boots, I would definitely recommend trying them on with some thicker pairs of wool socks because that’s what you’re gonna be wearing when wearing the pac boots. Also you don’t want the boot too tight around your foot with heavy...
Hoffman Pac Boots, they’re waterproof and tough, also they have the wool liner that you can take out and dry every night. I live in Montana and they’re the boots I wear after about the middle of October and they are the best late season boot I have ever worn. With the leather upper of the boots...
As a former resident of California, I don't necessarily agree with the statement of "hunt bucks up to 220"+"... 220 bucks are rare everywhere, especially California. I've spent a lot of time in some of the best deer units in the state and never saw a buck like that. A more realistic option I...
I would recommend contacting biologists in Bend, Ontario and Lakeview. I would focus on the East central and the south east corner of the state. People are gonna say blah blah blah deer numbers down, no big bucks left. But there are still big bucks out there. In my opinion your best bet now is...
Did the hunts in Wyoming or Utah take maximum points? Will you be able to scout the hunts in Wyoming and Utah as much as you could a hunt in your home state?
You don’t have to answer these questions these are just all things that I would consider.
Hey Jeff, the best Info I can give you for X2 is scout, great unit with a lot of potential but don’t expect to show up and kill a four point from the road. It’s a tough desert unit. A lot of glassable country, but also some more heavily timbered country.
Good luck with the big valley antelope tag! There are some really nice bucks in that unit, just all the private land makes access really difficult sometimes.
