After following up on the other bag/quilt thread, I was doing some research. It seems some people thought the EE temps were way off and others thought the zpacks were. Anyone here use both can comment on durability, quality, satisfaction between the two?

Both company's fabric weights are nearly identical. Both companies use almost identical fill weights of the same down fill quality if you choose. Both companies use vertical baffles. I have used both. Temperature ratings are so subjective with so many variables, you're always going to find people who say a bag is true to rating and some who say they were cold. Having used both brands, I would say "warmth" on similarly rated bags was identical. Preferences would come down to bag width, length, and possibly foot box design. It could be said that the shaped footbox of the EE Enigma could potentially be warmer, due to allowing the feet to sit in a more relaxed position without changing the shape of the footbox.

Now that Zpacks offers a true quilt, a more accurate comparison could be drawn with EE. Comparing the warmth of a quilt to an enclosed bag is simply not fair. Once a bag is cinched up, drafts are impossible, which is not the case with a quilt.

Either way, both the Zpacks and EE products are fantastically made, super light, and will both serve you well. A comparable bag from either should have imperceptible differences in perceived warmth, as they share negligible differences in the specs that affect warmth.

The other one that I would look at that people seem to think is true to temp: Katabatic Gear. You can also get them over-filled if you sleep cold. They're a little more expensive, but haven't ever heard anyone knock them.

Every review on them I came across said the same, just a little spendier than these two. EE is even cheaper than zpacks.

Before today, I havent really looked at quilts and honestly, the specs are off the chart, in terms of temperature to weight and price. Honest question: why on earth buy a high quality 0 degree 850 down bag for 2,5 lbs (at best) for $600 when you could get a 900 down quilt @1,5 lbs for $350? What's the catch? I have always used a sleeping bag because that's all I have known, and not until being scared of the price tags for the bags I would want have I ever investigated a quilt. Seems like there must be a reason people pay $700 for WM bags. Why?

A lot of guys find that when you get down to seriously cold temps, completely eliminating drafts with a quilt becomes difficult to impossible. I'm not saying no one has success with it, just that when you hit single digits, you're priorities can change. Being able to toss and turn no longer seems so critical, ventilation is something you're definitely not interested in. And frankly, the warmth provided by a true integrated hood can move from comfort to a safety issue. Again this may not be true for everyone, I just know that a lot of guys come to this conclusion.
