I'm decided on getting a duplex tent for scouting and backpack hunting. I'm trying to decide if the heavier spruce green material or camo is worth the 2 extra ounces (yeah yeah, I know!). For those that have experience, what did you choose and are you happy with your choice?

I have no first hand experience. However, just last week I was chatting with a hiker. He said to get the heavier colored fabric because it would hold up better. For what that's worth.

I'm 99% I'm going that way, but on the other hand I've heard only good things about the thinner material being very strong and durable as well. For an extra 2 ounces it seems like a no-brainer if it is a tougher material, but then why do they even bother selling the lighter stuff? I'm suffering from analysis paralysis!

I just picked up a used Altaplex in camo, but if I were buying new, I would choose something a little higher visibility. I’ve been in a situation where it was very foggy and I had a very difficult time finding my tent, even though I was probably less than 20 yards from it. The only thing that kept me from losing it entirely was catching a slight glimpse of something yellowish-orange through the fog. I have no doubt that, had that tent blended in more with the environment, I would have been screwed. The fact that you’re saving a couple oz. only helps in the decision as far as I’m concerned.

I get that. I ponder over things myself.

I believe he mentioned the blue did not hold up to uv as well. Also heard the camo or darker colors are better to keep light out on those full moon nights. Again I have no first hand experience just trying to let you know what I've heard.

When I was looking into the Camo Dyneema, I understood that it is the same as the lighter 0.51oz Dyneema and the extra weight came from the Camo print itself. I could not get anyone to confirm what the camo had been printed on, whether it was a layer of Dyneema, mylar or something else, or whether it was simply the additional weight of the ink. Neither of the manufacturers I asked knew and neither said the durability would be increased. I stayed away from it as I didnt want the camo, I was just looking for a heavier fabric then the 0.51oz.

It would be interesting to know the facts behind it.

I read this as well.

FWIW I own some of the heavy stuff. A tarp in camo and a tent in regular weight. I can’t say I have really noticed a difference in weight or Durability. Holes happen at wear and fold, points. Tears and cuts happen where they happen.
