zenbivy or argali 20 bag

Doesn’t that pretty much make it a sleeping bag put together with clips instead of a zipper?
The difference i believe is that your sandwiched between the pad and your quilt and the quilt is connected to the sheet which is strapped to the pad. You can roll around or switch positions without rolling off the pad. Even though the zen bivy set up i am looking at is a few ounces heavier then the argali bag, it is atleast a pound lighter then my current 20 degree sythetic bag.

I'm a toss and turn sleeper, for comparison sake I'm 5'11" 180 and can roll around in a Regular Argali bag without getting twisted up.

I have a fleet of sleeping bags and haven't used any of them since I got a Zen bivy 2 years ago. It's so much more comfortable, roomy, warm and manageable when I don't need maximum warmth. The only time I don't take it is the hottest days of summer when I just use a down sheet that I'm partially under most nights.

Nope. There is no other sleep system like it- no bag, no quilt is remotely the same. Videos is probably the best you can get, but as @atmat stated- it is most similar to your sheets and comforter at home.

I’ve been watching the videos. I’m just not understanding on how you stay warmer than rated. From all the reading I’ve done you don’t want too much extra room/air in a sleeping bag for air gaps because you lose heat. Wouldn’t you have way more heat loss if you’re using it like a blanket vs a good bag?

I know currently when hot I open my bag and normally zip in the night when I cool off. I’ve also felt the cold spots while using my zero bag in heavy fog at 30F and freezing rain. Went to bed damp and woke up cold and put my big puffy to warm back up and sleep. Didn’t like getting cold in a zero deg bag at 30deg. That’s the reason I’m looking for a new bag.

The 10 degree zen bivy kicks the crap out of my WM badger 15 degree bag. First off zenbivy infinitely more comfortable and second its way warmer than any bag I have used. Single digits in the WM bag and I needed a toboggan, base layer and wool socks and would still get cold and add a puffy during the night. Same temps in the ZenBivy and I slept in my boxers and never woke up even slightly chilled.... I just ordered the 30 degree quilt as the 10 degree will be way to warm on early season trips...

You can use it like a blanket, or you can clip it in. When you clip it in, there’s some overlap with the sheet so there’s no drafts. That’s the “system” helping stay warm. Then there’s the fact that the quilt itself is just good and warm.

I have the 10* light. In archery season this year it was freezing at night and very wet. I slept in a tshirt and boxers and was still too warm at times. It’s a great system.

Think of it as a sleeping bag without a bottom rather than a blanket. Except in warmer weather, then you can use it like a blanket.

@Formidilosus do you make a custom zenbivy using some type of stick on loops like zpacks loops? Or have you used the actual zenbivy bag? I love my quilt from El Coyote and was thinking about modifying it to fit the zenbivy system which would also make the purchase cheaper.
I’m not formilidious, but I did make my custom zenbivy with the zpacks stick on loops. Works very well. Not sure if it’s as nice as the authentic one but I felt like I get a better quilt for less money.

I just dont know anything about the system, but some of these posts have me interested in it. I use a cot the majority of the time and hadnt seen much of anything about using it on a cot

It’s not different except I happen to sleep better on the cot.

You have to use a pad though. The system is functionally worthless without a pad, as the sheet attaches directly to the pad.

What makes you say “better”?

I have SG, EE, FF, and one or two more quilts but I don’t remember which brands. The Zen Bivy is the best/warmest of them all.

Another fan of the Zenbivy sleep system here. I have the 10*. It’s the best sleep system I have used. That said, I have not tried the Argali, but I don’t know why anyone would use a sleeping bag after trying the Zenbivy.

Maybe “better” wasn’t the right word. I used the Katabatic flex quilt with mine. It was a little lighter and the sizing that I wanted. I probably should have used the term “better for me”.
