So for me this trip serves two purposes. First and foremost it is my son’s first backcountry hunt. My wife and I have always believed in spending money on core memories and experiences rather than useless junk. We take nice trips as a family that are centered around them as Christmas presents instead of buying them video game consoles, toys, Jordans, etc that they will forget and eventually throw away. So that is the first and primary reason for the trip.

The second reason is to hopefully take the second leg of my sheep slam. I’m hoping to get a nice Fannin. I just won’t spend what is being charged now on a Stone hunt. According to the outfitter they kill more Fannins than Dall so it is doable. But if we find a big, mature Dall then it’s a Dall hunt. My son will be hunting for caribou on the trip.

I’m not going to go into all of the details on the prep for the trip. Plenty of physical preparation and countless trips to the range.

The time since booking this hunt had moved slowly. But over the past few weeks it has blown by. Too much to get done at home, work and other commitments and the stress of getting everything to a point where I could completely disconnect for 2 weeks has caused time to be in short supply.

But the day has arrived. My son and I are officially on our way. Our first flight to Denver was delayed and our connecting flight to Edmonton was also delayed. Finally had our heads hit the pillow at 1:30 am.

We hang out at the hotel in Edmonton this morning (My 14 year old is still sleeping as I type this as 14 year olds tend to do). We head back to the airport mid-morning for a flight that arrives in Whitehorse early this afternoon.

Fair warning. I’m not a photographer. I don’t typically take a ton of pictures but I’m making an effort with this trip since it is me and my son. With that said, I took one pic yesterday.

Here we go….

Good luck in the Yukon 🍀 Get a big ram!

Wheels up for me on Saturday morning to ANWR for AK dall hunt.

Happy hunting, TheGrayRider a/k/a Tom.

Good luck!

I may have to message you for some details or info on the outfitter as I have been trying to convince my dad to go get a stone or fannin. Dreamt about it his whole life and has hunted sheep with me the last couple years and I think has really gotten the bug for it.

Awesome man! Can’t wait to see some success pics!

Can’t wait will my little guy is old enough to do some hunts like that.

Whatever the outcome is you and your son are blessed to share the experience. Im sure it will turn out well can't wait for the report!!

good hunt and luck to you and your son. our weather has been strange with warning on bad thunderstorms in mayo, rancheria and watson lake as well on the nahanni for the last few days.

good luck and good spirit remember time is not flying the same here take it the right way, we call yukon time for a reason.

surprinsigly this year we still have snow on lower heights.

take care.

Made it back to Whitehorse late this afternoon. Checked in, ate dinner and about to crash for an early flight home tomorrow. I’m going to be posting up a pretty detailed story of our hunt. In short, it was EPIC. I will post each day separately as it will make it easier to keep track of associated pics, etc.

To answer a couple of questions that I know will come up:

- Yes, I would book with this outfitter again. Honesty, integrity, hard work and actually cares about their hunters and their employees. Everyone that worked there loved what they did and loved the husband and wife that own it. It showed.

- If you want info on the outfitter please message me directly. There was one extremely minor hiccup that was an honest mistake. I address it briefly in my write up for our first day in. I do not view it as a negative for the outfitter as he did everything in his power to make us successful. I mean everything. I also don’t want it to be an issue for them. I genuinely have nothing but positive to say about the entire experience and crew. I also wanted to give a thorough and detailed report.

Without further lead up…….here we go:

July 31 - My son and I were picked up at 8:00 am at our hotel in Whitehorse for a quick shuttle to the airport. A short while later we were in the air headed for base camp. An hour and 45 minutes later we, along with the two other hunters on our flight, were greeted by the always smiling faces of our outfitter and his wife.

Late morning and early afternoon consisted of checking rifles, eating lunch and repacking bags prior to being flown out. The repack turned out to be more of an adventure than I expected. We were booked for a horseback hunt but the outfitter thought we were a “flex” hunt and was planning to send us on a backpack hunt. It was 1000% an honest mistake and we ended up spending plenty of our time on a horseback hunt (stay tuned). As it turned out, the first part of our hunt might as well have been on horseback as we used an Argo to get ourselves into sheep country initially anyway. No harm no foul. At this point the main issue was that the gear we brought (packs, pads, bags, etc) were all for a horseback based hunt. But after a few hours we were able to stuff everything we HAD to have in my son’s 3,000 ci pack and luckily I had thrown in a 55L dry sack to go along with my 4,100 ci pack.

Once we were packed up it was off to the planes to fly into our hunt area. Skilled and SAFE bush pilots were appreciated. These guys are pros.

Once we made it to the hunt area we took a long, adventurous Argo ride into our hunt area. We made camp around 10:00 pm that evening.

Day 1 - Opening day. Back into the Argo to continue making miles back into our hunting area. We did see a grizzly sow and her two cubs early afternoon. We were able to watch them from a distance for a while. The sow had a very distinct ultra-blonde coat. By late afternoon we had parked the Argo and made our initial ascent into the area we hoped to find sheep in. By 6:30 pm we had camp set and were ready to blow up the rest of the mountain to look for sheep. We did. No sheep. Made it back to camp by 11:00 pm.
