Looking to get my son a pack. He’s 9 and loves to hike. Looking for something that would function as a day pack but could also be used to hold some extra gear when we do overnighters. Thoughts?

Deuter Fox is what my son has. It is a nice adjustable youth sized pack. Good availability. Beware on loading, it is easy to get a kids pack weight over the suggested 10-15-20% of body weight with just a few items.

The Deuter Fox series are great packs for kids. I started my son off with a REI Passage 65. Too big for a day pack but it is great for multi day trips and the adjustable suspension will let him use for a long time. My daughter started with a Kelty Lynx 2650. That one is a little bit better for day pack size but still has enough capacity for an overnighter as long as your caring some of his gear.

The Deuter Fox 40 works well for my 10 yr old son. When he outgrows this he will move to an adult pack

I’ve been doing the same research. Western Edge makes some really nice looking packs for youth. Probably as nice as most adult packs. All of the above mentioned packs are also good. Look at Sierra trading post. They often have good youth packs from major manufacturers and have some coupons as well. In the end I realized I wasn’t needing something very nice for my daughter as she only hunts with me and backpacks with me maybe once or twice a year. I ended up just buying her a backpack from Walmart that I can shove her sleeping bag, snacks, and water in. It’s not the most ideal but for us it works. Good luck.

Western Edge makes really nice youth packs. My boy has an REI youth pack and it doesn’t really compare. To me the Western Edge is a miniature version of a Kifaru, SG, Exo, etc.

If your kid hikes and backpacks multiple times a year its probably worth stepping up for a nicer kids pack. They might enjoy the outings a lot more if they have a more comfortable pack.

The sponsor you mentioned is Western Edge Gear. https://westernedgegear.com/ If you search Rokslide you'll find other posts. Here are pics of my 10 year old son packing all of his own gear and a Ruger 1022. This pack transformed him from a whiner into a little stud, comfortable, confident... The bag is a Kifaru Molle Express with all of the stays and suspension removed, a Kifaru Grab It, and a Mountain Ridge Gear Cody Pack. Highly recommend this....

That looks legit! Could you clarify what the Molle Express is? I'm not able to find it on their site. Nice work getting him all set up!

My kids both have the same packs but in the blue color and I believe they are nice equipment for sure......also check out Sierra trading Post site I was into one of their retail stores today and they had mystery ranch packs for something like 125.00..in a few different sizes and colors.

Molle Express is a discontined Kifaru pack. I liked the volume for him, but the suspension didn't fit, so I pulled the stays, shoulder straps and belt and put the bag on the frame and added a Kifaru Gun Bearer to add external organization. The rifle fits between the bag and frame.
