Youth optic

My sons 6th birthday is coming up. I got him his first centerfire rifle:

tikka 16” 223,
Krg echo
OCL hydrogen L

But the last Part I’m like 95% settled is the optic but I wanted some other opinion.

We live in the south and hunt whitetail and I plan on his shots being short , less than 50yards.
Probably half that hopefully. For first few years.
I’m leaning hard on getting a red dot. This will get rid of the eye relief issue and I think help him find and stay on target easier .When a deer comes out. We been shooting this year with other 22s and 223s and he definitely does better with the red dot. And it will be no adjustment as he grows.



Any thoughts?

I personally have my 11 year old using a fixed 4x leupold on a Tikka .223. But an 11 year old May deal with eye relief and consistent head position a bit better than a 6 year old.

I like just a bit of magnification to help pick a hole in the brush if needed. I also like the fact that it is fixed power and a very simple duplex reticle.

The ease of the eye relief issue with a red dot does make it sound pretty good. I would use one of those as well, especially at the distances you describe. Will it be on a food plot or in woods? On the ground or elevated?

If the red dot works for him I don't see an issue with it. If wanting a scope I would put a trijicon Huron on it.

Ground blind woods mostly and possible fields edges.
We can hunt fields but I wanna limit his range for a while.
Target practice as far as he wants but at game time I wanna keep that distance close for now.
Yea I think maybe in a few years 10+ he’d be fine with magnified optic.

I liked I was considering a lpvo. But I think maybe just do red dot now. And move to glass in a few years if he feels the need.

I'd also recommend a red dot. Easy to aim, lighter weight, both eyes open, unlimited field of view, high contrast/easy to pick up, more resistant to rain/fogging issues......this ease of use allows the kid (and me, i love red dots too!) to better concentrate on other variables, such as shot placement, trigger squeeze, proper shouldering of the rifle, etc.

A red dot sounds like a good idea for all the reasons given. There are plenty of years to come for more than that.
