Well…never say never.

I haul a hatchet now and then. If you are processing a lot of wood or doing some bush crafting on a trip they are worth their weight. TBH I find a pocket saw to be more bang for the buck in cutting wood and sawing bones.
I have a hatchet at home as well but have had thoughts about getting a tactical style one ever since the Terminal List series came out

I've got a cold steel model, its sort of handy. Doesn't really split big wood.
Some guys go crazy decorating them.

I got an email from a knife dealer and the Winkler tomahawks are near a thousand dollars now.
Who buys those and do they use them?

With a range of 750-1,000 miles, I do agree tomahawks are handy to have on hand.

Oh…you’re not talking about the missile…

Never used one but I think they’re cool.
I clicked on this thread imagining it was going to be a discussion on the morality of shooting a bunch of TLAMs at something. Somewhat disappointed it wasn’t.

I really don’t understand the appeal…what function does a tomahawk serve that wouldn’t be better served by a different tool? They don’t seem versatile. And I don’t know when they became tacticool…6 years in combat arms and I never saw anybody carrying one. Of course, that was 20 years ago, not 120.

I have a hi-lift so rarely use a bottle jack. A tomahawk seems like a bottle jack to me.

Wasn't there a big Navy Seal and tomahawk controversy some years ago?
Terminal list series by Jack Carr a retired seal made them popular.
Main character uses a winkler in the books and series.

I’m not going to ever pack one, but there have been a few long nights sleeping out of a day pack, next to a fire, where it would have been used. 🙂

I had to look up the difference between a tomahawk and a hatchet. I always have a hatchet in camp to cut kindling but a tomahawk looks to me more like a weapon. Might be worth packing around if you lived in a place like Portland or any other third world places with drug zombies roaming around.

I carry a hatchet in my truck and use it when camping. I wanted a cool tactical one since I watched The Terminal List. You know, so when I get a tumor and uncover a conspiracy I can eliminate those responsible in close quarter combat. 🤣

In all seriousness, I like MKC’s small hatchet they just came out with.

Do yourself a favor....don't go kill shit with it and post videos on YouTube.

Enjoy your outdoor time how you enjoy it....comparison is the thief of joy.

Today? None.

In the colonial era, the tomahawk paired with the skinning knife seems to have been an effective combination for both general frontier living and hand to hand fighting. In the 1830s, the Bowie knife gained popularity. By the 1840s, there was a Bowie on just about every belt in the West, not a tomahawk.

Bushcrafting - guys and gals mostly practicing primitive skills:
Firemaking, building using flint and steel, ferro rods, natural tenders.
Shelter building out forest materials, hence the use of hatchets, axes, knifes.
Pretty useful skills for outdoors people.

I have managed to get by without one but if carrying a tomahawk is your thing then I think it's great. I don't even care for a belt knife so Im probably not a candidate for one. I have always liked a pack to carry my things and never cared to have accessories directly attached to me. So if I did carry a tomahawk it would be in my pack.
Seems like just extra weight to me. Heck we got people on here that dont bring anything to wipe their arse with because toilet paper weights too much……..
