Your take on the use of a Tomahawk

Maybe they can't be as concealment as a knife, but there is still both a utility and nostalgic feel by having a tomahawk on hand when your out in the wilderness. I'm looking forward to when a bladesmith I know will make me a full tang spiked hawk.

Back in my rendezvous days we had Hawk & Knife throwing competition along with black powder shooting, still have both but don't use either ... they just stay in the wooden box with the rest of my rendezvous gear. May be useful in camp chopping kindling or something but couldn't imagine carrying one around.

I put it in the same camp as the machete. Heavy, not very practical, and makes me question the sanity of a person I see carrying one.

I use a trappers hawk all the time..it goes in the 4wheeler, tractor, duck boat, ect...it lives under the back seat of the truck. I dont pack it around hunting but handy tool to have around when your doing chores...I probably use the hammer 3x as much as the blade.
Great for setting trail cams and brushing in blinds.

They are a handy tool, lighter than a hatchet, but still too heavy to pack around most of the time, especially when ounces count.

I have multiple units from RMJ Tactical that I use for various reason in the field. If I don't have one in my pack, I have one in my vehicle.

I had a couple of tomahawks and I sold them all. I had no use for them. For me, I found a machete or hatchet to be a more useful tool in camp or in the woods.

Correct me if i'm wrong, the original trapper / mountain men hawk did not have a flat pounding surface like the hatchet does, the steel was simply forged in a loop for the handle.

have not carried a hand axe since I stopped trapping. I do keep a small hand axe in the car in case I need to cut a small tree off a back road.
machete I used a lot duck hunting when younger to cut reeds and willow when I found a remote pot hole holding ducks. Still use one today but just for reeds to camo the canoe and sit in the rice.

Well…never say never.

I haul a hatchet now and then. If you are processing a lot of wood or doing some bush crafting on a trip they are worth their weight. TBH I find a pocket saw to be more bang for the buck in cutting wood and sawing bones.

I saw a tomahawk that was also made to smoke an herb from. So since that is dual purpose I think I could get on board with that one.
