Rifles are bullet delivery devices, and cartridges/powder capacity determine the velocity.

Don’t favor a “sweet” spot?

I am drawn to hunting cartridges that can deliver high BC bullets between 2900 and 3100 fps. I am in AZ so late evening cross canyon/arroyo shots are common in the last 20 minutes. Wind also can be very calm at that time.

My sweet spot gives me great ballistics to effective hunting distances, and the smaller the cartridge I get less recoil and shorter barrel length. I am still working out the 6mm and 22 cal for what bullet I will stick with. The new TMK may get the nod.

I started with the 7 then went smaller for less recoil and shorter barrel:
7 SS 180 VLD at 3050 fps 26” barrel
25 SST 133 at 3075 fps 22” barrel
6 PRC 115 at 3000 fps 19” barrel
22 creed 80 at 2950 fps 18” barrel

Those give me max range for target fun and better wind deflection than other capable cartridges inside 500.

That’s where I like to keep my hunting rifles too. Both 300 WM and my 7 PRC. Both around 3k with as high BC bullets that the guns shoot well. 550 and under is my hunting distance. Besides my 6.5 CM I shoot a 143 at 2735, I limit that gun to 450 though. It’s fairly light and definitely not as stable on target at distance compared to my magnums.

.6-.650s at 2850-2900 sure seem to be a good spot for sustained velocity past 600, excellent wind numbers, and not too fast for close up shots, and it’s easily achievable with 40gr of powder in a 6mm.

That being said, I have no complaints with a small 6.5 (Lapua and Creed for me) spitting .640s at 2650.

I'm with you...I like speed and make the comment "magic happens around 3k fps" ;)

Current hunting rifle lineup:
30 Nosler 22" 215 @ 2900
30wsm 24" 155 @ 3260
6.5saum 16" 130's at 3k
6prc 18" 105 @ 3100
22 Gaymoor 20" 80.5 @ 3300 (sold this one recently, next one will be either 18" or an SBR @ 14"...haven't decided)

I need to sell the wsm and saum...it's time for something else, who knows what I'll replace them with.

The 14” 22 creed is fun… just below 1800 fps at 650 at 4500 DA. Can do everything reasonable for the vast majority of hunters.

I still go to my 18” 22 creed or 19” 6 PRC hunting where I do in the west so I get to the sweet spot.
