Just reading on the (maybe) required ATF permission required to leave your state with a suppressor, atf form 5320.20 "Application to Transport Interstate...". It seems there is some significant lack of clarity on whether this permission is required for a suppressor. My local FFL/SOT says this:
"If you want to go out of state with it you must file ATF form 5320.20". National Gun trusts (never heard of them, but...) has this to say: "This doesn't include suppressors, silencers, or AOW's, per their definitions. We however, recommend to file this form be filled out for every NFA firearm that you are transporting. To ensure that you aren't breaking any laws." Silencershop (who seems more legit on the topic than either of the above) says "when you take your suppressor out of your home state; you (the owner of the suppressor) are not required to complete any special/additional paperwork. " However, I cant find any clarification from the ATF, which is of course typical.(eyeroll)
It appears to be a simple form, but it lists specific dates, addresses, etc and the turnaround time looks to be 2-4 weeks or more. To my left is a suppressor no-fly zone, but to my right is a nearby state where I routinely bop across the border for an impromptu day hunt or match, often on short notice. I also make occasional "scheduled" trips out of state, but that's less common. It seems pretty darn cumbersome--bordering on prohibitive--to have to file and get approval for every impromptu day trip out of state. I hear people talk about the initial ATF approval timeline, but I have never heard anyone talk about this requirement, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a official atf statement on this with regard to suppressors (I could not find one) or a good legit source of info. Also interested in peoples personal experiences ont his, have you filed this form for every out of state trip, and if so what has the turnaround time been? Any experinces to share with regard to this, etc?
And since it's bound to come up, I am fully aware that this is not necesssarily a good place to take my advice from, I will of course do my own research and make my own decisions.
