I only archery now...have taken elk in the past with 30-06.....currently though my mountain rifle is Tikka T3 300WSM for its versatility, ( with180gr TSSX) but have only deer hunted with it, plenty of gun for elk and I am not a long range shooter.

I don’t have a picture of it but I’ve been carrying my Savage 110 Bear Hunter in 338 win mag for the last couple years. Still haven’t gotten an elk with it yet but it’s not for a lack of trying!

I used my t3 in 308 this year. 150ttsx worked fine on a small bull. I also like to carry my m77 compact in 338rcm but haven't kilt an elk with it yet. Just some bears. I plan on using my new build which is a 280 ackley next year.

My first rifle was an m77 compact in 260 rem! It’s always cool seeing it chambered in unique calibers. Hope you get one with it someday!

Winchester model 70 Ultimate Shadow 300WSM with a VX1 4-12 x 40 Leupold, weights 7.2 LBS, simple rifle that I used on a small cow elk my first hunt last year, picked it up used at a local gun shop last year. I will probably upgrade the scope when I get the funds. I didn't want to backpack in my grandfathers 1917 Enfield .30-06 (profile picture) he received as a gift from my mom and uncle in 1974. Serial numnber gave it a production date in 1918 so not bad for a 105 year old rifle from WW1. It was sporterized at some time and has a 4X Japan Campco flipover scope! It weights over 10 LBS and I think I found a slight crack in the reciever/barrel area so I'm reluctant to even shoot it again. My backup is a Winchester model 94 .30-30 lever action that I started hunting with over 40 years ago with my dad. So blessed to have it now since my dad is with the Lord now. Would love to shoot an elk with that rifle. I wish I still had my Ruger M77 300WM stainless steel I hunted with in Alaska. Great rifle that took a cow moose at 35 yards, little overkill for that distance though. I also have my dad's old Ruger Blackhawk in .41 magnum that needs to go hunting with me sometime but it too needs a new scope since it's vintage 1970 or so and it fell apart inside after shooting it last year, lol. I guess I'm a vintage shooter.

Thanks. I may someday. It sure is a handy rifle in the bush but it never seems to be the first one I reach for. It's been on quite a few moose hunts but so far has only killed bears.

I have never hunted out west but I’m moving to Wy in a few weeks. I bought a Browning X Bolt Hell’s Canyon in 300 WM. Anyone got recommendations on scope power for elk/mule deer in southern and eastern Wy? I’ve only hunted the southern US and Midwest, all my whitetail shots have been 300 yards or less.

Depends on how far you are comfortable with shooting. I shoot long distance and prefer a high power scope (5x25).

Right on. Right now I’m comfortable out to 400ish yards. I plan on Doing some good practice once I move out there and have more space. I’m on the fence between the vortex razor 4.5-22 or the leupold vx6hd 4-24. I don’t knock vortex because I’ve hunted with them before and they are great glass. However I’m curious if the extra cost with leupold is going towards the name or the actual performance.
