You best Opening Weekend tips?

Heading up for my 16 year old son's OTC opening weekend elk hunt. What are your favorite tactics for this early in the season?


We have a plan of attack for this particular area but you know what Tyson says...

After scouting again this morning, the elk aren't in the same place as few weeks ago. Be ready to hoof it on opening day to find fresh sign. At least that's my strategy.

Find the thickest timber, get setup in it, and call your tail off. If there is a bull within earshot he will come take a peek in an hour or so.

My plan of attack is to wake up early every morning sippin on some hot Joe. Saddle up a big stout gelding. Throw that matthews bow in the case and ride some good country on a good horse. In the instance I have a chance to put a stalk on a bull so be it. Otherwise I'm enjoying the heck out of this creation for 14 days.

Climb high, find water in the thick stuff. ID trails in/out. A) Set up early, with wind in mind and throw some bugles mixed with cow calls, then be ready. Repeat every hour until 10AM, B) then still hunt into the wind till a few hours before sunset, C) repeat A until sunset, then enjoy where you're at...few people nowadays ever get there!

If 16 is old enough in your book, enjoy an adult beverage and show what responsible consumption looks like. This trip will be irreplaceable and make an indelible impression on your young man. Good luck...remember, it's the hunt and time shared that really matters.
