My son and I recently purchased Hell’s Canyon Speeds in 300WM for each of us. These rifles will be used primarily for Whitetails with a western hunt mixed in every few years. We sighted these rifles with Barnes Vor-Tx 165 grain factory ammunition running 3160 FPS. We are both happy with them and I killed a nice 8 point this past Friday at a mere 125 yds. Needless to say DRT.

IMO best value at the price point. I shoot a hells speed 300 WSM 2/2 and both elk collapsed within 10 yards shooting 180 AB.

My HCS in 300 WM shoots Berger 210 HVLD into less than 1/2 inch at 100 yds. Barnes VorTX 180 gr into 3/4 inch. Mag internal dimension is 3.6".

If it fits you, then absolutely put it on your short list (if not at the top).

Take a look at the "Long Range" version as well. Not much more money and better twist (1:8 versus 1:10). Biggest drawback is another 1.5 pounds.

Bought a vortex viper pst 3-15 (FFP and moa) Optics planet had it for $900 - 15% and also came with a $100 gift card. Couldn’t pass it up. Now I just need to buy the rifle

Only question I have left is should I go for the speed or the long range?

The long range has a 1:8 compared to the 1:10 on the speed, however, the speed is about a pound less and this will be a backpacking gun.

I vote speed. You’ll notice that one pound every minute you hump it around. You’ll notice the 1:8 if you take long shots with very heavy (250gr) bullets at or around sea level. A benefit you may never actually realize.

I have a HC Speed 30 06 and a Max Long Range 300 Win Mag. The Speed weighs around 9 lbs with scope and the Max weighs 10.4 lbs. Both are awesome shooting guns. I picked up the MAx for elk hunting in CO.

Is there any other recommendations for a similar light weight but accurate out of the box gun? Have heard tikka and howa brought up a fair bit? Just looking to stay under 12-1300

I would like to know as well. Would like to be able to shoot 215 hybrids

I can load the 210 vlds to the lands with my browning hells canyon long range while still using the mag but the 215s. I have about .095” of jump. It stills shoots .3 MOA at 200 yards loaded at mag length

Also on the weight I was torn between the speed and long range as well but heavier barrel sold it for me. I went with a vx-5 HD 4-20x 52mm because it only weighs 20oz versus the 40 oz vortex razor so still kept it at my target of 9ish pounds all kitted out. I don’t regret it. If I was buying a lighter caliber I’d go with a speed. Will likely be picking up a 6.5 prc in the next year.
