Guys,
I hunted the Sierra Madres second week of September and had so much fun and came really close to getting an elk. I had no intention of going back with rifle but got vacation and planned on giving it a chance with general rifle. Planned on leaving Illinois tomorrow for same general area in Sierra Madres but just called the cabin we had reserved and was told main highway is closed for the Winter and higher elevations have 10 to 15 inches and would need a snowmobile to get there. The forecast is calling for super cold temps and more snow and ice possible this coming week.
Hoping guys in Wyoming and guys that hunt this last week of rifle can tell me if I am crazy for coming that way looking for an elk. I only have a half ton truck with highway tires.
Any area of the state that isn't getting hit so hard? About ready to pull the plug but it kills me to realize my elk season might be over.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might be able to supply.

Truck won’t make it up many trails. Be prepared to hike a lot to get up high. We don’t have too much snow but trails are a disaster right now, and above 8500’ is snowy.

Get some chains, get a tent with a wood stove, and go. When I was younger I loved all the snow and slop during elk season. These days, not so much. But if that doesn't bother you......go for it. Those were some awesome times hunting the deep snow and slop.

I left before the blizzard last weekend. Forecast was up to a foot of snow and 70mph winds. The snowys on monday was knee deep hiking all day.

If you go, be prepared. Another system is blowing in this weekend.

We haven't gotten too much snow in Western Wyoming. But the main issue is road conditions. They are sloppy from all of the hunters driving up, the thaw and freeze cycles. Right now they are rut and mud city up on most roads. Even the side by side is slipping and sliding and questionable on a lot of the higher trails. Again, you can go as far as the truck will take you and hike the rest of the way. I got my elk that way.

I never let weather stand in my way. Even in zero visibility, maybe I'll bump one or find him in bed. I just live by the motto that you shoot more elk when you are out in the forest than you do from your sofa, and a bad day in the forest is better than a good day at work. I'd just get out and go and figure it out on the ground :)
