Wyoming Unit 35 Cow Elk Hunt?

I have been hunting around Buffalo for the last few years for mule deer and antelope. Next year, we are kicking around trying to draw cow elk rifle tags in the Bighorns. Ive been doing a little research on this and it looks like we can draw cow/calf tags in Unit 35.

Does anyone have any experience with this unit, or units in the area? Just wanting to know if this is a tag that is worth applying for.

Thanks
Aaron

35 has been tough the last few years. The elk seem to move lower to private pretty early anymore but you shouldn't have a problem finding cows!

I would second Jared's assessment. I live in Buffalo and the 35 or 36 cow tags are nice rifle options. The elk are skittish when the first rifle blast of the year sounds off and can move low early, but there are plenty of places to access and find groups of cows hanging around to fill a tag.

35 is one of my favorite areas to hunt and the type 6 tag is a great leftover tag if you don’t get your initial draw.

All of that side of the Bighorns can be challenging due to private land issues as stated above. However, it can and does get done by quite a few people. Here is how it stacked up compared to the other type 6 tags in Wyoming in TagHub.

I’m going to revive this old thread, I’ve got a 35 type 6 tag this year.

Elk are selective about which private property they go to. Like spawning salmon they go to the same place every year for the most part. One fence can mean the difference between 600 elk and none. The chances of finding a property that has elk and isn’t either being leased by an outfitter, hunted by friends and family, or doesn’t allow any hunting isn’t very good. If you really really want to kill an elk my advice would be to find an outfitter that offers cow hunts. If you really prefer to be unguided ask him if you can pay his price just for access and hunt it on your own. But also be sure to tell him that you’re not going to run all the elk off the property. Private land elk need to be handled with care or it can go from a few hundred elk to zero real fast.
