Wanting to do a cow elk hunt in Wyoming in 2025 and have a few questions. The way I understand it is that if you draw a permit that it will not use pref points. Hope that is correct. Do you have to pick a specific unit and if it doesn't use points is it random draw?

RP Cow/calf tags are all random. No PPs are used or needed.

Yes you need to pick an area.

I’ve never put in for the Type 6 tag - Often times, there are tons of left over cow/calf tags available to purchase over the counter staring in July. Where my family ranch is, there were over 300 left over tags available (quite a bit of private in that unit, but still plenty of public).

Does the Wyoming game department have a list of units that have type 6 tags available other than the hunt planner?

Look up the regulations and season structure.

I'm not sure that the 2025 options are available, but you can see what was for 2024. Barring a change, the same should be available for next year. Quotas and seasons should be similar.

I haven't seen it organized anywhere in a searchable format for reduced price licenses.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I will have to dig a little deeper and might even have to make a call to the game department.

I use to draw type 6 tags as a resident pretty easily in area 7. Since moving to another state and having to come back as out of state it's been much more hit and miss, drew them in 2022, but not last year. Looking at the draw results for last year, it looks like there were far fewer type 6 tags available on that area, not sure how to tell if that's a one off, or a trend ahead of the application deadline this year.

Keep in mind they set quotas after you apply. Sometime in April. You can modify or withdraw your application up to a set date. A helpful resource is to Google "Wyoming Game and Fish Job Completion Reports". They have a little synopsis on plans for tags from the previous year, but you will want to know the area you plan to hunt. I can't recall when they come out either.

The WGF significantly reduced the Type 6 and Type 4 tags in Area 7 in 2024 from 2023
I was wondering if that reduction was due to the unlimited Type 8 tags in Area 7 in 2024. I'm guessing most or a lot of folks have some level of private access in Area 7 so the Type 8 would make more sense.

I did a Type 6 cow elk tag this year in WY as a NR. Kept my preference points but did have to pick a specific unit. Definitely use the official website of fish and game or something like GoHunt to plan.

Thanks, those are really useful documents. For some reason, I can't seem to figure out which one includes area 7, per the region division it should be between Cody and Laramie regions, but I don't see where it's covered in either
