Flying into Billings and driving down to hunt Region R for the general rifle season

Without access to an ATV, how limited will I be due to road conditions? There are few places to get away from ATV roads from what I can gather. Not afraid to put miles in on foot, but it looks like those with side by sides will certainly have the upper hand.

Anyone with experience in the area that wants to reach out to me, I would love some info on road conditions, looking around the town of dayton and/or shell as reference points

My plan was to start the trip as high as possible and then default to the lower blm if roads are not conducive to our vehicle limitations

Any locals on here that want to PM me let me know

Sorry I just saw this, I hunted region R in 2023, definitely stay high if you can otherwise the lower areas had very few deer. I have pictures and information if you're still interested.

Im out here now. The top isnt bad. Snow gets drifted in to the two-tracks bad. I buried the sxs today. We pulled a couple people out yesterday. It is super muddy in places, then 3' of snow in places. This is off hunt mountain road. Deer are way down. Talked with 11 guys. Only 3 tags filled. We have seen one legal buck in 2 days and this is our 3rd time here. Best of luck.

Finding a legal one was tough but we finally found one today
First time mule deer hunting, but I would come back I feel like we learned a lot. It is intimidating having a whole region to hunt but 3/4 of these were up on the mountain. The biggest one was down low on blm
