Wyoming Archery with 9 points

I'm not sure what can be openly discussed here, but I have 9 points in Wyoming I want to use this year for an Archery hunt. Would a type 9 license be the best choice? I have a very flexible schedule and have two or more weeks to hunt.

Will also be heading out sometime this summer to learn whichever area I decide on.

Thanks in advance!

My partner has 9 and there isn't a single type 9 hunt I will let him apply for, and almost all he couldn't draw anyway. Stay away from the East side of the Bighorns.

Maybe it's worth mentioning that I'm looking to get out of the PP game and just wanting a good experience. I have plenty of experience with the DIY Backcountry thing in CO, but minimal experience in WY outside of a hiking trip to the Bighorns and Southern Wind River.

Thanks for the input so far.

Do your own research on a Type 9 tag and see for yourself whether you can draw one that appeals to your type of hunting and skillset. If you turn up nothing consider General and share points with someone else. With 9 points you still have a few more years to buy points before you start getting into a scenario with more unit options, if point creep doesn't get you. I've got double digit Wyo points but won't be burning them until 2026, since I've got to get done with Utah LE elk with mid-teen points. At middle-age I'd rather hunt more often than a trophy tag every 10-15 years. Good luck to you.

9PP would guarantee a general tag...do you or any close friends have elk experience in a particular area? If you have good knowledge on an area with good numbers of bulls...go for it...you never know - it might be so good you are back on the PP race next year:)

A word of caution on the Type 1 if you plan to bowhunt. You need to check the seasons the week before the NR draw. They set the seasons right before the draw. Just becasue a unit allowed bowhunting previous years on a type 1 it may not the next year. Some units will have no bowhunting on a type 1. Some start Sept 1, some start Sept 15. This can all change a week before the draw.

Point creep is real in Wyoming. I have 13 points and can’t quite catch what I’m chasing without paying for the special. Even then it’s a crapshoot if I’ll draw.

Bighorns = more elk and more dudes
Other type 9's = less elk less dudes + bears

Depends on what you're after I guess. Both would be pretty and fun I think.
This reply is very true. The Bighorns have great hunts, but there are definitely people running around. The other type 9 tags are in areas full of grizzlies, and the elk can be fewer and farther between. Like a lot of forums, 9 points is right between great limited quota hunts and general tag hunts. I'd say average points with a buddy and pull two general tags, or go for a type 9 tag that fits your parameters. There's not many quality limited quota units between 5 and 10 points.

Wyoming west general is your best options lots of units to choose from.

Lots won't like that anwser because it's going to drive point creep up but the west general is better then alot of the draw hunts and if you have lots of time you can find a bull worth 9 points in in any unit in the west general region
