WY - unit ** - walk in with Llamas?

How did the hunt go? Can you give details on your experience with them?
i was on the first rifle hunt and it was fantastic. A true trip of a lifetime. Everyone either killed or had an opportunity to do so. The weather was a little warmer than normal which probably slowed rutting activity. Their horses and mules were top shelf. I was impressed with the entire operation. Do not, however, expect to see elk behind every tree. This is big country and you will cover a lot of ground. It is a very physically demanding. You will ride horses a lot and hike a lot. Taking some riding lessons will definitely help but nothing can prepare you for the 30 mile ride into and out of camp. This is a pic of the bull I killed.

I use to own llamas, they’re super laid back and quiet, they have toes not hooves. Use to use them for back country bear hunts…. They also use almost no feed since they’re a giant goat.

The bad….. they’re freaking slow. I can out walk them. Maybe was just mine, but they couldn’t do like 2mph even with a light pack going up long grades….

Where as my gaited mules, I try to maintain a steady 4 mph. I’ve done empty trips at 6mph or while hunting ridge tops 6mph average.

That may not seem like much, but when I went into the Thouroughfare with an outfitter, his big draft horse averaged 2.1 from camp to truck (I tracked it) I ride a lot, I mean a lot! And after that trip even I was a bit sore. 11 hours at 2.1 with only a 20 min stop for lunch.
