Just got back from hunting cows in Unit 35 (East side of Bighorns). 3 of us, put lots of miles on. Fresh snow early in the week. We were excited on Friday when we seen a single fresh track (first fresh in a few days). One guy thought he might have seen an elk running through the timber, that was it for the whole 9 days. We looked everywhere from elevation (over 9k), (no tracks), lots of time in Forest east and north of Highway 16. Nothing. Only sign we ever seen was on the very east edge of National Forest. A couple of days, there was lots of shooting from the north. Tried what existed of our area between 16 and the north edge, nothing there either. Seemed like shooting was still north or east of that (presumably Unit 34 / Bud Love). Talked to a few people, everyone had a different theory on where the elk may or may not be (High, Low, Private, Bud Love, etc.). Did see a herd of 400 or so in the open on the first hill out of Buffalo (as you go west on 16).
That's great!
I've become somewhat of a specialist at last-day tag punching. My hunting buddies suggest I just stay in camp and cook until the last day.
