Private land New Mexico is always a solid choice but.. the 5k part may be a issue there. Montana is a special place. I’d be happy just being out there glassing.

I've got friends that go into The Bob every September with a string of horses and mules. They've killed multiple elk in there but it's been a while. From what they've told me, they don't see the same number of elk that they used to see. They go for the adventure and tradition as much as anything then shoot their elk in October and November on a private ranch that they have access to.

The antler genetics in the Bob are not great for trophies. I have also heard that the grizzly population is getting so large that a gun shot is more like a dinner bell for them. I guided in central MT for several years with great success on private but still no guarantees. Huntin Fool is a great resource, I use if for all my out of state applications.
