I'm making the plunge and finally getting quality backcountry gear. I'm looking for a cold weather bag that is a manageable weight. When looking into a cold weather bag, what kind of weight can be expected? What would be considered average and what would be considered light?

I have been eyeballing the Western Mountineering Badger that has a 0 degree rating. Have a late season hunt planned and my 15 Deg. bag might not make the cut. I'm sold on the Exped down pad too, all to go in a floorless shelter + stove. The stove will go out at some point and I will no doubt need the quality bag when it does. This sounds like a great set up with a shelter, ti stove, ground cloth, 0 deg. bag, and pad at 14-15 lbs. If I hear of a deal on such a bag I will shoot you a PM. Let us know what you end up with.

@xXlojackXx cold would be 15 deg and below. Looking for a 0 bag. I'm from PA so we get a ton of snow and am looking to do a few archery/flintlock trips this late season while I'm home for Christmas break. And thanks @LaGriz and @Jjamesdean!

@Alaskan89 I'm not really sure...I want to find a balance in weight and price. Something used or older would be best. I'm 21, in good shape (I compete in powerlifting and can carry a heavy load) and have a year of school left. I don't have a lot of money to blow, but quality is important. Doesn't have to be the latest and greatest, as long as it's packable and warm. I'm hunting out of a MR Metcalf I scooped second hand.

A good 10 degree bag will hover right around 2lbs even. I would recommend a Western Mountaineering Versalite 10 or a Feathered Friends Lark UL10. Both will run you about $550, but you said quality is important.

I went through this last winter after freezing to death in a 30 degree bag. The temps got unseasonably cold (7 degrees) and I wasn't prepared. I looked at several bags and finally bit the bullet and bought the 0 degree Kuiu Superdown bag weighing in at 2lbs 10.5oz. I would have bought a Western Mountaineering Kodiak MF weighing in at 2lbs 15oz bag but one of my big concerns was the moisture factor. I haven't had the Kuiu Superdown bag in really cold weather yet but it is very VERY warm. I have been looking at the quilts this year also. they look very interesting and versital, but I don't know much about them.

Also good r value sleeping pad makes all the difference in the world. There again not cheap but can you put a price on a good nights sleep?

Thanks everyone! I'll keep my eyes peeled for some of these bags, maybe on clearance or here.
