Would you shoot a different arrow for Bison than Elk?

John I just took a 2200lb bison bull this past December. My arrow set -up was FMJ's with a 125 grain single bevel two bladed Helix Blade. Total arrow weight with brass insert was 525 grain. My elk arrow set-up with different arrows is around 450 grain. My Bowtech RPM 360 definetly favored the heavy arrow with it's patterning in my targets. I cannot emphasize enough about using a good two bladed single bevel head on those beasts. My first shot was from 56 yards broadside and it was a complete pass through. What happened without my knowledge until we were dressing him out was the arrow hit a rib upon the initial entry. The ribs on those animals are no joke. My Helix broadhead hit the rib and continued to rotate and split the rib bone completely and then went through both lungs and out the opposite side of the animal. My second shot was from 45 yards quartering away and penetrated through his left side, through his diaphragm and then one lung and into his right shoulder. Again after dressing him we discovered that the arrow head actually split part of his shoulder blade before becoming embedded. He snapped that arrow in half inside his body when he began to run again. I put a third arrow in him from 20 yards broadside and that was a complete pass through. I really wish I had just let him rest after that first kill shot but he took off and we did not want to lose him in the brush. The last thing we wanted to do was come around a large pinion or juniper brush and have a wounded bull charge usView attachment 23572View attachment 23573View attachment 23574.

I can't wait to get a shot at bison this year hopefully. My arrow setup is almost identical to yours. Except i am shooting axis 260 instead of fmj

Good luck JT. I know you have had that hunt lined up for several years. Let me how your hunt goes later on this year. That was def the hunt of a lifetime for me. Prepare yourself if get one in addition to a moose that your going after for the sheer amount of meat you will be bringing home. I had to get another 10 cu in chest freezer in addition to the one I already had to hold all of the meat. Got about 675lbs of meat off the hoof of that bull. Im still in awe of the sheer magnitude of those animals. Just waiting till October to pick up the shoulder mount, european mount, and rug from the taxidermist. Forgot to add the FMJ'S were the .300's and I was pushing those 525gr arrows about 285 fps out of my bowtech.

Yep booked it about a year and a half ago. Just a little over 6 months till I head out. Just working to get my bows shooting good with my fixed blades out to 80 and get in shape now.

One pass through, one buried to the fletch... 400ish total arrow weight with a Solid.

I shot one in CO off a 60 k acre ranch a few years back with my whitetail rig- switchback XT at 70 lbs, carbon impact 340s and a 4 blade muzzy 100 grain. One shot at 50 yds and pass thru to fletching on the back side- went 75 yds and tipped over. I couldn't believe it. Some damn tasty meat!! Good luck

Shot my cow bison in WY in January with a 508 grain Easton Axis 260 with 50 grain brass insert and 100 gr. slick trick razortrick. 80# Elite Answer with speed mods, same setup I shoot for everything. Complete pass thru with plenty of energy left at 34 yrds. She ran 80 or so yards and was done in 35 seconds.
