Would you put shot distance limits on big game?

This is something I have thought about after shooting more and more in recent years. If you could put a rule in place and hunters would hypothetically comply, would you put a maximum allowable shot distance on big game? Predators do not count because I’m of the mentality that if you can put a bullet anywhere on a predator it increases the chance of them dying. I know this shot distance would not be enforceable but if it was, would you make it a law?

I could see this going two ways. One could be a maximum distance of say 600 yards, which in my opinion should be the maximum distance for 75-90% of hunters. Another way would be a distance qualification of some kind on a say 12” target if you want to shoot past say 400 yards. Those are just thoughts on how it could be done.

Although I don’t like limitations on entry into hunting or owning firearms, I think I would push the button and make it a rule, but I might get beat up doing that. I really do not like a one size fits all approach on anything so I think if someone wants to shoot past X distance that is considered long range, then a qualification could be a way to keep folks accountable.

This is all hypothetical. Please don’t ban me from Rokslide.

What do you all think?

I think a distance ban would be a good idea, again hard to enforce and probably is just an ethical issue. Seems like it could dangerously turn into everyone trying to break longest "confirmed kill" records. In Wyo someone got them an antelope over a mile away. Not much fair chase in that IMO. I know some people are capable of that but a majority are not and doesn't take much to just wound and lose that animal.

We had a big thread on this haha: it’s a fun thought experiment. I would bump your numbers up I think 98% of hunters should not shoot past 400-500 yards. Probably 75% should not shoot past 300. Most bow hunters should not shoot past 40. It’s futile to try and enforce a random number since it would be next to impossible. Our giant argument centered on reducing tech in hunting equipment, ie: archery, side lock muzzy, straight wall cartridges with iron sights. As a way to get 95% to have more realistic ranges, some will still push the limits no matter what the tech, that way you don’t have to come up with a made up number. There is a back fire guy on YouTube who has done a series of great videos with really really good shooters on what it looks like to score a first round kill shot in hunting scenarios

Not a good idea unless you're looking to start a urinary decathlon.

I will say this, my self imposed limit is about 25% less then the max range in which I've killed an MOA steel target at. And no, I haven't shot steel to a mile. I shoot a fair amount, have quality equipment to include range finder(s) and a Kestrel / Ballistic apps.

I'll also quantify that my max range is only good for the best of conditions; good rest, light and or steady wind, still animal giving a clear shot. IF any of these aren't present, my max range is reduced.

I too have seen people talk about shooting or wanting to shoot an animal at X range and then really struggle to hit a pie plate at 300. It's typically from a lack of knowledge, practice and or equipment.

I won't even put a cap on MY shot distances..........bow or gun. Just like speed limits on the roads.........I drive based on the situation and conditions, not what a sign says. Same for shooting.........just too many variables.

Same. My worst shots have been closer than I care to admit (time constraint, spooked animal).

My longer shots, even with my bow, are usually better.

It all depends on the conditions. Some shots at 300 are no go. Hypothetical max for me is further than most…

I have put shooters into position, had them dry fire, dope the shot, and make kills at distances that would bogle most minds. If you can press the trigger without disturbing the rifle, it goes where pointed.

I appreciate all the input. It’s something I have thought about. I do agree all situations are different so the distance can vary quite a bit shot to shot.

100% agree.

You have to pass a test to drive a vehicle on public roads. Why should using a weapon on public land be any different.
Unsure where you are but folks still drive without valid licenses and those with valid licenses can still drive like garbage.

All a license proves is that everyone can take an unflattering photo and we do what we are told every X number of years (renewal).

Break the law all you want. It’s still illegal and when you cause an accidental death the prison time is a great opportunity to study up for the exam. Hunting without a license, or out of season is still poaching. All a test does is generate another requirement to weed out those more likely to cause an issue and provides a mechanism to punish those that are caught.

Without rules, we live with the animals.
