Would you eat this deer? It has an infection with pus at the base of his pedicle. I read about brain abscess syndrome in bucks and got worried.

Based on that picture, I wouldn't be concerned as long as it wasn’t spread throughout body and lymph nodes. Use you nose and smell the meat.

I would be calling an expert for the answer instead of the random people here. I'm sure we have some really smart people but how do you know who to trust?

My personal opinion is yes, I would eat the meat from that deer unless I saw something else in the actual meat.

Thanks for your replies. I spoke with a deer biologist and she said that the infection is usually encapsulated to that area and meat should be fine.

Nearly every buck I have killed after the first week of November had some sort of injury to the neck/head that looked similar to that. No issues eating any of it. Looks like a typical antler puncture.

It's likely nothing more than an injury/ puncture wound created by another buck's time. I ran across similar wounds on whitetails all the time in November in the taxidermy shop. I've seen them significantly uglier than that.
