Would like to build a custom rifle and I have a few questions??

I’ve done several of my own. With a custom action, I cannot come in at $2500 if I buy a McMillan drop in. I generally use a barrel from one of the button rifling manufacturers, like PAC Nor, Hart, and X-Cal, $300-$350 range. I will occasionally rent a reamer, $40, or buy at $160 from Manson. The trigger and bottom metal are killers when you have to buy separately.

handwerk is right on the money if you really like the Mauser style CRF actions. Find a good Model 70 Classic and send it to Pac Nor. Action truing comes with the barrel job, and their barrels flat out shoot. Stocks...if factory wood it’s good, the comps are pretty cheap. I’ve gotten several McMillan drop in stocks, and I’ve shot them before and after bedding. While I duck for cover, I can plainly state that for hunting purposes, they generally shoot just fine without bedding, just like Mr. McMillan states on the website. And I’m not too shabby at stress free bedding. That covers stock and barrel’d action. Bottom metal from PTG is OK if you don’t want to reuse the Winchester 2-piece. You can probably sell that on eBay for the price of Kiff’s aluminum one piece bottom metal. There are others that are vastly superior but a lot more expensive. Hard to beat the Model 70 trigger for a hunting gun so you’re good there. Do get a forged Williams extractor if your donor is factory stamped, about $60 upgrade.

Please let us know what you come up with. It’s fun to do these and try to stay under that $4500 mark. And when it’s all said and done, you could have bought 5 Ruger American’s that are probably more accurate. Hahahahaha . It’s all about the chase though.

You have what like 5 factory rifles? My guess if you went to sell them, you could recoup about 80-90% of purchase price depending on how you bought them. When you build your custom that you are not to sure about, you will not get 50% back. If you don't reload, I'd trip 2 or 3 of the others, buy the best factory 6.5 Creedmoor you can find, put a nice scope on it and go fill up an ark.

A little background
I have had Remington 700s and win 70 and some browning abolts, as of lately I have fell in love with the Winchester 70 extreme weather , I love the 3 position safety, I have a win 70 extreme weather in 300 win mag, 243 win , 7mm mag, and tc encore pro hunter in 7mag and 25/06 but I would really like to do an all around do everything custom rifle in the 2500 range. So for what I have given y’all so far what would be the
best action,
barrel and
stock
and caliber
for that custom rifle build I’m thinking about doing

Any and all suggestions and opinions welcomed!!!!

I do not nor do I want to start reloading.

I primarily hunt in the deep south Mississippi , Louisiana but Midwest also with occasionally shots at 400 plus but mainly 100- 250 as an average. I WOULD LIKE THIS RIFLE TO BE A DO ALL AND BE ABle TO TAKE IT OUT WEST WHICH I DO ABOUT EVERY other year.

Don’t waste money on a custom, get a factory rifle for under $1000 and put a good scope on it, based on your update.

I wouldn't go through all the work having a custom rifle built if I was only going to shoot factory rounds out to 400 yards. There are plenty of factory rifles capable of shooting 400 yards.

Now if you are going to reload and want to make the best ammunition possible tweaked to your specs then a custom rifle makes sense. one without the other doesn't.

I did not read through every post but looking at the OP I am going to suggest skipping the custom and getting a Christenson Ridgeline or Seekins Havak in 6.5 PRC. I prefer the CA but both will most likely shoot factory ammo under .5 moa and will be good for almost anything under 500 yards and medium game under 1000. Yes for elk there are better cartridge options but I am not a fan of any of the factory ammo. My second choice would be a Christen Ridgeline in 300WM and shoot the Berger 215 factory ammo if you can actually find it.

Been down this road several times.

Customs are nice...very nice. But for a hunting rifle I would just buy a Barrett Fieldcraft and be done with it.

I thought my rebarrelled Kimbers were the end all be all mountain rifles...then the Fieldcrafts came out.

This is what I was thinking too

I have a Barrett all set up and ready to go in the classifieds!

Brux sells their barrels for $300. At least the last 3 or 4 I bought were. After having a custom barrel I never want to go back to a factory barrel. So much more consistent. WAY easier to clean too. Factory barrels take forever to actually get clean. Customs don't. If you don't do the metal work yourself then I'd have Bob Green or Rogue Precision Gunworks do the smithing. I've had guns built by both and they were both top notch.

That Model 70 comes in .264 WM, 7mm RM and all the WSMs. What do you want the new rig to do that the current does not?
