Hey Guys,

My friends wife has an archery elk tag this year. I can get some specifics on her bow tomorrow. I know her realistic goal is to be pulling 50 lbs well before the hunt. My question is for a female pulling 50 lbs what's your target arrow weight. He's trying to get around 400 but is worried about lack of speed after. Thanks for all input and thoughts.

There is guys here that are more geeky on this then me, but just to give a reference. My wife has a 26.5”DL, 400gr arrow, she pulls 60lbs., for elk she shoots an iron will. Out of a bowtech solution ss. The bull she shot last year was 20 yards and her arrow went 20 yards past the bull before it hit a tree after a pass through.

Short draw kills your speed 40 yards with a good 2 blade broadhead should work great still. My go to is (easy button) easton axis arrows with the correct spine the gpi and brass inserts gives you a good arrow weight and options to go slightly heavier if desired.

For my wife I did 400 spine with 100gr insert. Ended up around 430-440gr with 100gr broadheads. It’s only for whitetail but they shoot great out 70 yards with BH. For elk I wouldn’t hesitate to use this set up (3 pins and the gap is fine for elk out to 40 WT it’s a 20 yard and under shot), but also would be fine dropping the insert weight down 50gr. I can send you a pic if you’re curious!

Yep, slap a 2 blade BH on there and she will have more energy that what I have in my recurve- and I blow through everything with a 2 blade even moose. Bump the arrow weight as much as you can where she still gets a reasonable trajectory.

Closer to 400 grains the better. But honestly anything over 350 will probably be suffice. Good broadhead, better tuning, and smart shot placement.

Good call on tuning.
Need that arrow flying as perfectly as possible.
Bareshaft tuning was my method of choice.

Thanks everyone for your responses.....he is planning on having her shoot an iron will......he needed a vote of confidence in his thinking.........I certainly agree with the tuning part....

The late Shari Fraker killed more than 2 dozen bull elk with a 50 lb round wheel compound bow and Thunderheads. I think she was 5'4" tall, as I recall. Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement.

Yep- around 400 is a good goal. She'll be good if she limits her shots to reasonable ranges. Tune tune tune- need a pure shooting arrow that maintains its energy and doesn't waste it with a wobbly backside.

What’s her draw length? I feel like there’s plenty of men on here shooting 50-60 with 25-26” draws. They get it done all the time. Sharp broadheads - another vote for iron will. Keep the shots within what’s she’s comfortable.

Curious how the arrow for elk from a 50# bow would differ if it was shot by a male?
Unless they are A.I. arrows, I don't think they could determine the sex of the hunter! :ROFLMAO:
I know you're being funny but typically men would have a longer draw length which would end up having more speed and energy with the same draw weight.

I had a similar question for my Dads first archery elk hunt last year. He ended up just north of 400gr (411 gr or so), DW 50lbs, but did have DL 29”.

I think 400 gr is a good goal, but all dependent of DL in my opinion. My wife for example is at DW 50lbs, DL 27”, AW 373 gr at 240 fps. Practically the same velocity as my dad’s arrow. For her setup I’d opt for more of a cut on contact broadhead. My dad killed his elk with a QAD Exodus with great performance, 30yds ish, double lunch and broadhead barely poked out the opposite side (went about 90yds).
