Alright y'all, question for you. I've reached out to western mountaineering with the same question but I figured I'd get as many opinions as possible. This will be my first late season western hunt and want the best bag possible for the job.

I'm having trouble deciding which new late fall/winter bag I should go with and was hoping ya'll could help shed a little light for me. I am debating between the antelope mf with overstuff and the kodiak mf. I am 6' even and roughly 190-195lbs with a 44' chest ~51' around the shoulders. Being a cold season bag I think I would lean towards a 6'6" bag to allow me to stuff the next day's clothes down in the foot box.

Would you think the kodiak would be too large of a bag for my build?

I was on the fence between the two bags myself at one point . I went kodiak because you just tend to spend more time in a bag when it’s cold and if I’m spending more time inside the bag besides just basic sleep I’d prefer the trade off of a bigger bag over the 8 ounces saved . Also , I can stuff a quilt inside and go for really cold weather

Thanks Kevin, that seems like solid logic to me. Hopefully the cimmaron and large u-turn help with all that time in the tent too.

Kevin's advice is spot on. A little extra room can come in handy if you are weathered in. That is why I went with the Antelope instead of the Apache.

With the internal dimensions on the Kodiak I don't know that you would need the 6'6" inch bag. More weight and dead air space you need to heat up. You'll have room in the Kodiak for your clothes anyways. FWIW I have a Kodiak in 6'6" but I'm also over 6'3" and 210.

I owned both and sold the antelope. I am 6'5" 225 48" chest. The antelope was way too tight. I run the kodiak now and absolutely love it. The only downside to the kodiak is that it takes 20 to 30 minutes for it to heat up once you jump in it. A consequence of a larger bag. That being said I have never been cold down below zero.

If you really need the best performance the the tighter bag which has less space to heat. That being said most people don’t truly need the best performance out of a 5 degree bag. I do love the antelope bag though for when I need a good performing bag. Not having “extra” space to heat up in the cold is a nice perk.

Yep, I have the Kodiak 7' zero degree, with 5 oz of overfill

great in any late season

you'll not regret the extra girth of the kodiak, but if you get a antelope & you move around much you'll wish you'd gone bigger...im 175-180 & love my kodiak

I'm 6'3" and 190 lbs and have had an Anetlope 6'6" for 10 years or so. I've thought about selling it and getting a Kodiak several times. I sleep great in a quilt, but start to feel confined in the Antelope and just don't like that feeling.

It's definitely an efficient bag though. I sleep cold and I've had it down very close to its temp rating with no issues (I always sleep with hot socks and base layers at least).

I think I'll go with the kodiak since I'm a pretty active sleeper and the extra room seems to be more accommodating.

Any more thoughts on the 6' vs 6'6" bag?

I would suggest the 6'0" bag for someone your size. Having too much extra room in the bag can have a negative effect on the temperature rating. FWIW, I'm very similar in size to you. While I don't have a Kodiak, I have a 6'0" Badger and find the bag to be long enough and I have room on the side of the bag for a set of clothes.

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations. Got the bag in last week, and it's a good fit. We had one night here that got down into the 30s so not really good test weather but I was more than warm in just my skivvies after a slight warm up period for the big bag. The 6' bag is perfect for my height as well.
