Hello. I am a Drahthaar owner, breeder and German Testing System Apprentice Judge. I have also tested my dogs in the NAVHDA system. I would say some of the best, most consistent dogs I have ever seen were SMs and if I ever decided to change breeds I would strongly consider that breed. I have seen some good Grifs but not as consistant as the SMs. You will get just as many burrs in a Griffs coat and usually harder to get out. The SMs I have hunted with range close to my Drahts range. I have seen some Grifs get out under foot but most I have seen are extremely close working dogs.
