Wind shirts

FWIW, I removed merino base layers from my whitetail system as I soaked within several hundred yards of carrying the climber, backpack, and bow. Am now using lightweight synthetics as they dry in minutes. This is somewhat analogous to glassing: high exertion, followed by sitting.

Backpack hunting I use merino as I can cook it dry with the 240 or puffy when stopped.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing, and the baselayers I was wearing last time were 100% merino. I do have some blends now as they are certainly an improvement but it's really hard to beat a synthetic baselayer that dries so fast. Pretty much all purchases going forward will be synthetic.

I also decided I want my next to skin layer no heavier than 150 wt for active hunts as that seems to speed drying a lot.

I think merino is great for early season backpack hunts, though.

I have the Arcteryx Nodin. Packs very small has a packable hoody and pockets. The fabric
is not as robust as the Squamish but it packs smaller. I think both weigh about 5.5 oz.

I don't leave home without one- summer through winter; easily the most versatile piece of kit in my arsenal :)

for hunting I like either the Alpine Start or the made for military Patagonia Houdini (tougher to find these days)

again, these certainly aren't a replacement for a hard shell, but you'll be wearing this piece a heck of a lot more AND they are light and pack small

This thread made me order an Arcteryx Squamish this morning. Hopefully it fits the bill. It was a hard decision between it and a BD Alpine Start.

We are supposed to have single digit lows late next week so hopefully I can test it a bit.

Edited to add: In a serious case of analysis paralysis, I switched my order to an Alpine Start. They both look awesome, but I'm going to try this one for now.
