Working on my first wildcat design, and I'm curios is anyone who has experience in this are has any wisdom on reducing body taper from the parent case.

The parent case im using has around 0.012 body taper per inch, After reading some Zeglin and PO ackley books, I see that Ackley recommended 0.0075 as a minimum requirement for a good feeding cartridge.

Would it be advantageous for me to reduce the taper in my case design or just continue on with the established taper.

The case is already pretty fat at the shoulder datum. Its a modern parent case. But if I can get more horsepower behind it why not? Unless there are some downfalls im not aware of?

Thoughts?

I don't think that you would gain much capacity, and if it is already a properly feeding case design, may not be worth it. I do know when you go to Ackley designs, they don't feed as smooth as the parent case.

Couple of thoughts.
Parker Ackley was a genius- listen to him.
Is a few "horsepower" worth feeding problems?

How do we know there will be feeding problems?
I would not be exceeding Ackleys minimum taper recommendations. If I did change the taper I would go from .012 parent case to .009 or .0085
Which is 1-1.5 thou over ackleys min of 7.5 thousandths

You might be surprised how much capacity you pick up by minimizing taper.

I would gain a little less than what you are seeing there due to the fact im leaving the shoulder angle alone. But I've read that body taper has alot more to do with capacity than shoulder angle does.

That is correct shoulder angle change very little in case capacity. The taper will make a much larger difference especially if it’s a long action or longer cartridges.
