Hi everyone. We’re planning on a new dog this spring, and we’ve narrowed it down to down to a GSP or lab. If I’m being honest, this dog will be a family dog 350 days a year, and hunt the rest. I’m leaning towards lab. Our last dog came from a breeder who is now out of the game. Does anyone have any experience with labs in the SW area of WI? I’ve never had a professionally trained dog, but I’d also be interested in hearing any advice on training. Thanks!

Go on huntinglabpedigree.com and you can search litters .

Here is Wisconsin

For the training get Freddy kings the retriever trainer program . It’s the best 60 dollars you can spend and if you need help Freddy is always there to answer questions.

You could do a lot worse than to find a trainer with good references you can get along with, and then have them point you to a beeding or breeder.

Thanks, guys. All of the lineage and family names don't mean much to me, it's just tough narrowing down breeders. I guess reputation will play a big part in the decision. I do like the idea of asking a trainer for recommendations. I'll follow up with these leads while I'm supposed to be working today!

I know alot of the dogs and alot of the dog people if you find a litter i can check it out and pretty good chance i know and have seen the dogs run or l know some one who i would trust to tell me if the dogs have any problems. Like being noisy or dirty in the kennel

FC and AFC are field trial and the hardest titles to get but some of those dogs have to much horse power for the average person.

GRHRCH(HRC) is the hardest hunt test title to get and you have to have a really biddable dog and they have to be consistent throw 8 series of waterfowl and 2 series of up land

MH(AKC)/HRCH(HRC) is next down from the grand and most people are blown away when they see a master or hrch dog they are better than 99% of dogs most people have ever hunted with.

I would look for some thing with a bunch of grand and or MH/HRCH dogs in the pedigree.

A good pedigree with top end field trial chops is nice but for the avg guy i'd focus on known temperament traits of the parents around the house. You've got to ask more questions and get it from someone you trust on that front.

Not all of the FC type dogs are high strung but some of them sure are..

I sent you a couple names of local guys. They will get you in the correct direction

Don't be afraid to drive a little bit, but you're in a good location for solid lab breedings. Lots of tests and trials around you in the summer too, that's a good opportunity to go see dogs in action

You really have to decide what you want in the dog first and sort of work back from there. Size, traits, upland focused vs waterfowl or both, etc. There’s a lot of good and bad labs out there right now, but out of reputable hunting/trial lines you should find a lot more good than bad. I’m certainly biased, but you can’t go wrong with a well bred lab. My current dog is going on 2 this fall. He’s got a strong pedigree out of a well known kennel here in MI for high performing hunting and trial dogs, but only weighs in at 54 pounds and is my kids’ best friend. I couldn’t ask for a better family dog. Take your time and you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for. Good luck with the search.
