Why Haven’t All Of The CA and Transplants From Other States That Moved To WY,MT,ID Stayed After Many Winters And Not Moved Back?

The idea that somehow, the current crop of new transplants have magically cracked the code to enjoying living here is funny. While it is true dedicated hunters or those trying to escape the buggy man have extra incentive to make it work, there’s no denying having money from portable jobs or a healthy retirement helps a lot. Reliable cars, money to enjoy a wide variety of winter sports, plane tickets to warmer vacations, more travel than the average resident, second homes, never ending Amazon shopping therapy, etc. Those that are trying to swing it on a shoestring budget have it rough, especially if they are used to having closer access to relatives, or had to take a step down in career. That’s rough.

We have family members that talk tough about wanting to live in the middle of nowhere, move 50 miles outside of the town they grew up in and a spouse claims it’s a mental medical emergency if they don’t move closer to “civilization”, so they are back in less than 2 years. Lol

I had to smile when talking to a couple authors who love to read. They stay home and read and write all day, have subscriptions to over a hundred monthly publications, a giant book collection, and said they have enjoyed living in an Alaskan village or major city as much as a Wyoming town. Bookworms, the modern day pioneers. Lol

Yea conservatives are moving to ID/MT. But from my perspective a lot of them are shitty entitled neighbors. Zero humility, and they are turning every dirt road into pavement. The list goes on. They are assholes conservative or not, stick out like a sore thumb. Changing everything to match their posh HOA neighborhood they left. They should act like any good 1st gen immigrant should and adapt to the local culture. Instead they slap a Trump bumper sticker on and think that works.
This, we have this very issue in Wyoming. That and they are Christian conservative types that want us to be like the deep south. They clearly do not understand the political climate that is more so libertarian historically in this region.

Just because they swing right does not mean they play for the same team.

I was born in Chicago but grew up in MT.. Work kept me out west most of my earlier career spending more time in WY and CO. I experienced significant population growth but nothing like the past 6-8 years.

I understand most people being able to handle CO’s pretty mild winters and not moving away after a few winters. What I don’t understand is the CA and other crowd who have moved to WY and MT and have not left due to the extreme cold, severe and constant wind and very very long winters. I can remember winter blizzards in Bozeman where I had to shovel my Landcruiser out of my driveway to limp into town for groceries only to return one hour later and get high centered in the new snow in my recently plowed/shoveled driveway. Wyoming where I spent a week every month had some of the most dangerous and frequent high wind conditions on the planet, blowing semis over on I80 and I25, along with the same long very severe cold winters as MT.

I was surprised and totally wrong in my predictions. I thought for sure a real estate bubble had been created and these implants wouldn’t be able to put their homes on the market for sale fast enough after the first bad WY, MT winter. Many of the transplants are now going on 7-8 years in their new environment. Is there no signs of an exodus out of MT and WY? Is this the new normal? I definitely have been wrong in my predictions so far.Do a high percentage of these transplants have a second or third home? What other factors have kept the growth in MT and WY?
I haven’t read the replies yet but a lot of them are probably priced out of moving back.

The simple answer is that people adapt.

Folks don’t want to believe that someone from California could come and be as tough as they are. Everyone likes to think they’re a tough Alaskan, or Montanan.

Short story is just that people are tough, and when they want something they’ll figure it out.
Come on man, let the natives and longtime residents think they’re special for surviving cold winters. :ROFLMAO:

My Bay Area buddy always talks like this, laughs that me and another buddy are soon-to-be-screwed because all the Californians moving to Boise and Idaho in general.

It's been shown that majority moving to Idaho are conservative, confirmed recently by official voter registration stats.

So anyways, I'm sure NM is different (hunted there twice, beautiful but total 3rd world state) but here in ID/MT/WY we are getting MORE red with people moving here not less.
Weather it is CO, ID, MT or WY all have had a large influx of people moving there from CA and all are becoming more blue. Do you think it is the people born and raised there becoming more liberal or the people coming from a liberal state and voting?
You see the same pattern all over the world and within the US. People leave an area because they do not like it then they continue with their same patterns to change their new home to make it look like their old home.

The whole Work Remote thing has changed a lot of areas....like greater Boise. Then there is Gavin Newsom who should be voted realtor of the year in Idaho for about 5 years running.

I wonder if the trend to having to go into the office is going to slow that growth a little bit in spots like Tennessee, MT or Boise? Probably not.

Yeah, if 75% of the people moving to Boise are red, I can only imagine what % red who move to the other areas.
There is also a large Hispanic population here, and they are very conservative. Canyon County is 25% Hispanic and votes much heavier to the right than Ada County.

Sun Valley has long been occupied by rich liberals. Idaho's political legacy includes Cecil Andrus and Frank Church. Most left-leaning people that you encounter here are natives or long time residents.

What actually happens is that conservatives see all the recent development due to population and economic growth. They don't like this and jump to blaming liberals, Californians, etc.

I live in what was once a "rural" town in Ada County. While the elections both State and Federal are getting redder, the overall feel is not. It's more like posers. They vote for Trump and wear Charlie Kirk shirts and post on FB how "conservative" they are while having the police on speeddial for every kid fishing and guy duck hunting down on the river. Then they go on FB and beg for Trader Joe's or some other stupid crap. It's mostly Trump voting men who have brought their Karen wife with them and they've convinced themselves they're something that they're not.

Have I mentioned that I hate everybody and everything..... 🤣

Activists also tend to be more active than say those of us, with 2-4 kids and jobs and hobbies, ect….
And not enough of us get involved or vote at the local level. I get it, it's like pissing into the wind. That's why people keep moving, but sooner or later you run out of places to go.

You know, you made a pretty good assessment of what is likely happening.

I vote, for myself and my wife in all elections, ( wife is incredibly conservative but she is too busy running a business and raising kids to concern herself with politics, so she defers to me) but in Co it’s an absolute feeling of pissing on a forest fire 🔥

Some of those who move away from CA, and say they stay up north, aren’t as tough as you think. They’re snowbirds and winter in AZ.

Idaho has not become more blue in recent years. It has moved further right.
Maybe your right, I don't live there so hard for me to judge but when I see whats going on in CO and Boise City Council approves resolution adopting pride flag as official flag, it sure does appear recent transplants from CA are changing things for the worse.

Yep!! Don’t get me started on snowbirds. Hate them more than anyone. Clogging up the housing and traffic in the summer. Just pick a state and live there you damn pansies.
