why do people pack out hooves

For those that give the legs/hooves to their dogs, do you just cut it off at the joint and chuck it to them? Or do you skin it? I brought home the legs from my buck and they've been chilling in the freezer. Just been busy and haven't gotten around to figuring out what I should do before giving it to my pup.

I give them to him whole. Peeling the skin keeps him busy for another few minutes.

Always pack a couple out if it’s not a bad pack. The dogs love them. I will cut them off so they aren’t sticking up and catching on everything.

I say do whatever you want and that is all the reason you need. I hunt with a guy that always has the "right way" to do things and at times I tell him I am not going to do it his way and my reason is I just don't feel like it right now. Job still gets done.

I packed some out this year not by choice though. I leave them on to hang if I am not packing everything out at once. I came back to get my quarters out a of a tree with my horses and there was a couple G-bears trying to get to them luckly horses and a dog was enough for the bears to run about 100 yards away and watch. needless to say I dropped the quarters down and put them on the horses and got out of there before the bears decided they wanted them more then me

I left the lower legs on a couple of times for different reasons. It affected nothing and certainly didn't taint my meat.

But some guy on internet doesn't approve. Bummer.

What cracks me up more than the bone debate is the retards running around scrambling to get their meat cold. If it’s warm, or going to be warm, have a plan ahead of time! Personally, I pack a deep freeze and a little 1500W generator. I’m that A-hole at the trail head running a generator all night, chilling my meat down so we can keep hunting.
I was just listening to a podcast about some antelope hunters losing a day of hunting trying to find a butcher to store their game. They had great big toy haulers and 5th wheels. Got money for that but not a lil deep freeze and generator?
I think too many guys over prioritize their rack/antlers and don’t put enough focus on the meat care. They just drop it off at the butcher and “call me when it’s done” attitude. Is that really hunting?

A buddy showed a photo of his packout with hooves sticking out once, I asked why. "I didn't have a saw" I informed him you can just do it with a knife and directed him to a video, I think most that do it just weren't aware they are easy to cut off with a knice.

As for dulling, I just use the base of the blade and don't put a lot of force on it. You just need to cut in the right spot.

Funnily a lesser degree of that just happened to me. My buddy, myself and my two sons were out hunting last weekend. I was breaking down my son's buck and asked my buddy to take the lower legs off the two quarters I had already removed and show my boys while I kept going on the deer. At some point I noticed a loose leg tendon and asked what he was doing, apparently he had been cutting his legs off at the top of the joint all this time. I showed him lower down to keep the tendon intact.

*for anyone wondering why I was cutting my kids deer up, they haven't wanted to personally yet and its more important to me they keep getting exposed to hunting and not turned off than me forcing them to quarter it themselves.
