Got "scope eye" pretty bad with a smokeless muzzleloader one time when I shot a buck. I think I bled more than the deer did! That rifle kicked like a mule. The only other time was just a few years ago while walking out of my spot I shot a buck with my 7mm-08 (yes, 7mm-08) while wearing my pack. The butt of the rifle slid off the pack shoulder strap at the shot and the scope bloodied my eye pretty bad. I still have a scar. At this time, that 7mm-08 has the most brutal recoil of all my rifles! It must be the stock design coupled with my hot handload as I do shoot much bigger cartridges. Weird.

Just for kicks, I just put my muzzleloader into a recoil calculator and it came out at 56 ft/#. That’s double the recoil of a 9# 300 WM. Admittedly the recoil impulse will be a lot slower. But the thought of practicing with that gun makes me a bit more okay with the fact that I didn’t draw that bull tag during the rut this year.
Haha well now I don't feel as bad

I have a tikka t3x in 300 win mag, paired with a leupold vx 5. Thankfully it provides just enough eye relief to just catch a couple of eyebrow hairs at most lol

Being hit by a scope is usually the result of someone who doesn’t know how to mount a scope properly. When mounting my scopes, I look through them at Max magnification and provide the most eye relief possible. Always slide the scope back to you when determining eye relief, never forward. This’ll guarantee max eye relief. If you buy a rifle with a scope already mounted, you should readjust for your max eye relief.

Did it twice in the early years. Had a relatively light weight 300 Weatherby pushing 210 Bergers hard, no muzzle brake. First was target shooting uphill across a canyon laying prone. Hammered me good, no stitches though.
Second time was shooting cross canyon at a bull elk, similar situation. Uphill prone. That one got me good, should have gotten stitches. After that, I had a radial brake put on, doesn't compare to a good slab brake, but it was a big improvement. Those brow smacks are sore for weeks too! Lol

Nah. I would say many are from rushed shots or not paying attention to rifle mount when hunting.

I have had two 300 RUMs that scoped me pretty bad (cuts/blood) from the bench with 200 gr Accubonds. On the first one, I initially blamed it on the drop at heel of the new stock, which I immediately replaced. The overall weight of the gun with the new stock had been 8.25#, ready to shoot, which was a 3/4# drop from the old stock. A short time after going back to the old stock and no more scoping, I got another RUM that had significantly less drop at the heel. It also weighed 8.25# scoped, and it also scoped me with 200 gr Accubonds. I solved that problem by dropping to 181 gr and lighter Hammer Hunters.

While hunting, I was scoped on a whitetail doe by the second RUM above and 200 gr Accubonds. I was also scoped on a bull elk by a 50 cal T/C Encore and 290 gr Barnes sabots in front of a stout load of 777.

I must have been 19 or 20yoa. I had been using hand-me-down rifles my entire life up to that point. I had a real job, was making decent money, and it was tax refund season. I walked into Gander and fell in love with a Rem 700 LSS, 26 inches of stainless and laminate beauty. I topped it with a Monarch UCC 4.5-16 (IIRC). The only problem was that it was chambered in 300RUM. Way overkill for Minnesota whitetails. The rifle shot like a lazer, and was the most accurate rifle I have ever owned.

Couple years later my Dad and I are crawling on our bellies just before legal shooting hours. We were making our way toward the top of a hill that overlooked a grazing pasture. There were always deer munching in that field early in the morning, and they would always disappear into the thicker woods as soon as it started getting light. As legal shooting approached we spotted 4 or 5 deer. We whispered about which ones we would target, then waited a couple mins until it was legal. We whispered a countdown and squeezed almost simultaneously. Two deer down. Blood all over my face. Loved every moment of it.

I have had two of the Remington 700 LSSs in 300 RUM. Both would put five shots into less than 1” at 100 yards.

I’ve whacked myself a couple times over the years but never anything more than the scope touching my eyebrow. Anybody got a good story?

My friends old 300 Weatherby magnum and POS 4X scope with virtually no eye relief sent me to the emergency room. I still have the scar.

And I’ve had several more since then but that was the only one that required stitches.

Since then I relief has become super Duper important to me

Not an interesting story but… My Tikka T3 Lite wears a Leupold VX2 ultralight with Talley rings. Total weight is exactly 7 lbs loaded with a sling.

30-06 shooting 180 gr Swift Scirocco 2 going 2,570 fps (IIRC) out of an 18” barrel.

Scopes me at least once per year. Just gotta accept the pain. It’s stupid accurate and carries like a toy.

That is a super late gun. Show us a picture sometime

I have the scar between my eyebrows. Twice from the same rifle/scope about 10 years apart. The old lightweight 270 wsm doesn't get out much anymore.

I've done it twice with two scars to show for it. They've faded some over time and aren't terribly noticable at least. One was from a 30-06 in a rushed situation to shoot and the other was my muzzleloader with a magnum load in it. Both animals died though, so there's that.

Closest I’ve gotten was my tikka 300wm super light. It would knock my hat off EVERY single time. Those old scopes all had metal around the eyepiece. The new ones with the rubber are probably that way because of guys like @robby denning going to the ER. 😂

My 300wsm usually has a brake on it, when shooting off a bipod I have it gripped lightly so my body/breathing don't really move it much and it barely moves with recoil. I take the brake off when hunting timber sometimes and put a thread protector on. I didn't think about the brake not being on there during a subsequent mule deer meat hunt and was taking a shot like normal with the gun (loosely gripped) and a bit rushed so my shoulder wasn't behind it that well. It was now was free to recoil right into my face... which it did and split a 1/2" half moon gash above my eyebrow that gushed blood and still has a faint scar. Ooops

A Rem 760 I have in 30-06 has hit me on my glasses / brow area several times. Luckily no permanent damage to me or my glasses! I forget that this rifle is light in the muzzle and must not let it free recoil off the bags like my other rifles. Also, I think the shape of the stock contributes greatly to this happening at the bench. Never happens if I'm standing and shooting however.
