If you take time to tune your bow you should not have accuracy issues. I just got some Trophy Taker A-TAC's and they fly crazy good.

I’m really debating on carrying a nice cut on contact head for frontal shots and one or two mech heads for broadside shots just looking for the right mech head

My plan is to shoot an elk this year with a Sevr broadhead now that mechanicals are legal here in Oregon. I have all 3 sizes of the Sevr, the 1.5" Titanium, 1.7" AP, and the 2.1" Titanium. I am leaning towards using the 1.7" AP. I have had several animals live a lot longer then they should have on perfect broadside double lung shots with fixed blades, and even had 1 really bad deflection with a Shuttle T. I have even had to shoot a couple animals a second time on what would be considered a "textbook" shot. I am curious to see if a bigger hole makes a difference.

Limit your choices to 1 1/2" two blades or 1 1/4" three blades, take only responsible shots and you'll be fine with any well made mechanical broadhead.

Have killed 2 bulls with NAP Killzone, Low KE. The low KE have the COC tip and shorter blades. Both were complete pass through's.

Putting the broadhead in the right place is my #1 priority and I believe that I have better odds of doing that with a mechanical.

This year will be a Rage Hypodermic NC or the Trypan. Not sure which one as of now.

I have very limited elk hunting experience compared to a lot of guys on here.

The outfitter I hunted with last year was very anti-mechanical heads for elk as he's seen many more fail over 50+ years elk hunting than he has seen fixed blades fail.

Lots of guys do take elk with mechanicals so obviously there's no hard/fast answer and you could have a 50+ year career elk hunting with mechanicals and never have an issue....

One guy in our camp last year was shooting mechanicals and he lost an elk that he shot with a mechanical due to a collar issue. He didn't know what happened and then going back over what happened in his head, he realized his collar had dislodged at some point. He made a good shot but just didn't get the penetration needed as the head had already deployed. He spent the next 4 days looking for that elk and never found it.

That said/shared. I'm probably going to use mechanicals this year as I'm only hunting antelope and ibex. I think for my next elk tag I'll stick with a fixed blade for MY PERSONAL preference.

Current set up is 1.5" Grim Reaper Fatal Steel with a 420gr arrow going somewhere around 260ish. Have taken 3 with this setup. Previous setup was 1-3/8" Grim Reaper Razortips with a 400gr arrow shot out of the same bow so a touch faster than 260ish. Well in the double digits with this setup, would have to look at my notes to be exact.
Majority of the shots have been pass thru's, the ones that haven't all stopped in the offside shoulder. Never have lost one due to lack of penetration. Broadside aiming point is straight up the leg in the V.

Sounds like both heads have done the job for you on elk. Any particular reason why you now prefer the Fatal Steel over the Razortips? I'm curious because they both look very similar and it's hard to picture there being any difference in their performance.

I don't know that I prefer one over the other. I do like the blade on the end of the Fatal Steels vs. the chisel point on the Razortips, but can't say one has been markedly better than the other. They have both done the job well.
