so looking at a pillow...want comfort but also want versatility. meaning: comfy pillow that can be used as pump. I like the sea to summit aeros but it is only a pillow darn it...so I want the comfort of the aeros but with more usability. thoughts?

I tried an aero this year. It's alright but still kind of "ballooney". If you want to use some sort of pump sack as a pillow, it will definitely be a balloon and have no form. Adding clothes to it will help but the air in the sack will just squeeze around. Honestly, I may just go back to my old Thermarest Trekker pillow that is filled with foam chunks. It's bulky and has a little weight but it's more like a pillow.

I have both the Aeros and the Exped. I agree with colonel in that it is a little "balloony", but it doesn't bother me. The Exped is not so, but my problem is that I got a size too big and it won't fit in my mummy and therefore I have a problem with it sliding all over the place. The Exped does have loops for strapping it down though, so if I could find the right straps that's probably the best option. That way you could strap it down under your sleeping bag and wouldn't have to worry about a nice soft cover.

I used a cocoon this year and was pretty happy with it. A little bouncy but not bad.

Sometimes I use a pillow but it is really a little zippered pillow case with some scraps of synthetic fill that I stuff with my puffy . If it's real cold and I need the puffy it's a small amount of padding over the pack frame curvature in the pillow case which works as well

I made a small fleece stuff sack years ago for a pillow. I carry my socks, undergarments, and extra shirt in it and they provide the filling for the pillow.

I just put my puffy (or any extra clothes, gloves, socks etc) inside a Kifaru Mega Pullout for a pillow. Worked well for me this past Sept.

I have a medium size stuff sack that's semi water proof on one side ( the seams aren't sealed), and fleece on the other. I use it with the fleece side in to carry my rain jacket/pants while backpacking, then turn it fleece side out, stuff it with whatever, and use as a pillow. I've been using this now for 6 years and haven't found anything better to replace it with.

I used the stuffsack method until I had an extremely unexpectedly cold trip (below freezing in July) in which I had to wear every piece of clothing I had with me in order to get warm enough to pass out in my 40deg bag and ended up with nothing but my arm for a pillow. Not that this is going to happen often, but the 3oz are worth it to make sure I always have a pillow.

I have been enjoying the Klymit Cush pillow for the last couple years. Packs down to the size of a lemon or less and does its job.

Me and my wife used these this year, less than 2 ounces and comfortable even to two fifty plus year old people prone to necks bothering us without high end pillows at home! Not sure what you mean by "pump" doubt it falls into that category. They fit in our Big Agnes bags perfect.

Had a cocoon inflatable pillow, still do but don't use it. It's hard for me to get comfortable with.

My ass pillow, which is 3 sections of z lite pad is my pillow for my head when it's time to lay down

I use the Zpacks cuben fiber stuff sack with fleece on one side. It works really well, doesn't hardly weigh anything, and it's a waterproof stuff sack for my clothes during the day. Great piece of gear.

I used the sea to summit aero this past weekend. It worked pretty well and didn't feel too balloony. Although this may be because my kifaru bag has a bungie under the hood for a pillow. Makes it so the hood cushions the pillow more and I can keep it inflated to a softer feel.
