Jan thru july my German hunt terrier is with me in the woods constantly. Watching his nose helps with scouting. He’s wearing a e-collar so we don’t have any trouble. Come august, he stays home and I stay out of the woods as much as possible. His scent is likely no more offensive than mine to the deer.

He’s been my hunting partner for 12 years, runs on hand signals, and tells me when there is something around that he smells. Unfortunately he’s spending most of his time by the wood stove these days.

Nice!
Greyling is delicious!

But how would you train a dog not to chase big game? I've never cared but do care now! :)
E-collar....at least in our case.

He is trained to either "go guard" (wait), or "get em away" (move them away) regarding annoying cattle that are too close...

That’s a Brittany, correct? If so, how old was he when you started bringing him? I have a bird hunting machine of a Britt. I just can’t help but to think he’d want to “hunt” if I took him with. I’d love the companionship, but think I’d be babysitting more than hunting.
No He’s a border collie, Aussie mix.

The people want to hear the grizzly story
No all that exciting unless you were buzz or the bear.

I was packing a bull out right a dusk, thinking about how bad it sucked, I was coming to a junction on the trail where a couple of trails crossed at an angle. All of a sudden Buzz blows up(he almost never barks ) I look to my left and there is a boar Grizz walking on the trail that crosses at the junction. He wasn’t 15 yards away. Buzz runs right in front of him and the bear whirled around and ran back the way it came. I didn’t even have time to get excited but if buzz wasn’t with me that bear and I would have touched noses. But I did tell buzz he was a very good boy about a hundred times.

Good looking dog! What breed is it?
Jack Russell Terrier
I picked this one out of the litter my son raised a couple years ago.
He just made the same cross again and the pups are due December 27. He’s got three booked right now so there may be a pup or two still available if you’re interested.

Aha thank you very much!!
I could definitely bring my doggy then during the rifle hunt and on a leash. She won't listen for shit if she spots or smells a deer/elk.
I did manage to get her back to me when we saw a cow moose with calf so that was nice. Deer, she'll just take off.

I brought her bird hunting this October. She didn't want to eat one of the legs, very strange dog.

At first I thought she was a Jack Russell but she looks tall standing on that log.

Yeah, the picture of her standing on the log makes her look as big as she thinks she is.
She’s 12 1/2 pounds of confidence with a half pound of dog attached.

Scouting? Are you kidding me? How could you go scouting without a dog? Now ARCHERY hunting is a bit problematic, only had bulls in range twice ever with a dog beside me. Makes it TOO challenging generally. But I still try! But rifle makes up for the handicap. One time a bull ran straight at me and stopped at <25 yards missed him cleanly with a scope sighted .300... apparently I had forgotten to practice with a scared 3 month old lab puppy trying his damndest to crawl up my pant leg... far as I know that bull is still running but that lab is resting in my fencerow as of last April. He grew out of that scared of elk stage later in his life! As you might suspect my dogs are well trained and will heel upon silent hand signals, and chase big game? Hell they don't even chase squirrels unless released to do so.995E4C31-145A-4CEF-8107-509A2CF8116A.jpegA126674C-D239-4C30-9EE9-A09C891FD006.jpegDE5ED55F-9E42-491E-8140-512926FB2DAA.jpegAA490EEC-E0F2-4626-947E-B8196A4D56F4.jpegCF9B9BE5-AA60-48A6-8E29-984B78AF96A5.jpegCAD77D45-1446-42E2-BDC4-CA36A0EF7CC7.jpeg3C23B9EC-F652-4C4A-88DE-0BB2431D63C8.jpeg66C342F8-01AF-4422-8739-935FBFE3A911.jpeg39EE5027-5E7D-4D92-BBA3-DB4DE5C95049.jpeg9BCBDD14-E440-4138-95E2-EA321C65875B.jpeg

Like this, no better moment in this dogs life than when he is green lighted to chase cows out of camp. LOL

Love having my dog hang out with me in the woods. She always stays close. Only time it can be a hassle is when there is snow but then she just has to stay behind me.
