I've been bowhunting with modern compound many years. I've messed around with recurves over the years but never got serious. This year, I decided to dip my toe in Olympic style recurve, with a sight and long stabilizer. It's been a lot of fun. I got a pretty basic but good quality Korean made ILF setup, a Shibuya sight, and some 4mm Easton carbon/aluminum arrows. I'm lucky to have access to a very good teacher, who helped me set everything up properly and got me started.
I just discovered range-o-matic spin wing vanes, which kind of blew my mind. For those who haven't heard of them, they are wispy, curled, flexible vanes that attach to the arrow with double sided tape. If you damage a vane, there's no careful scraping and rubbing with acetone while praying you don't shave into your expensive arrow shaft. You just peel off and tape on a new fletching. It sounds sketchy, but according to my coach, that's what the vast majority of the top archers use now.
I'm having lots of fun and finding it much more challenging than shooting with my compound with mechanical release. I think it will keep me entertained year round, and I'm hoping it will make me better with my high tech hunting setup.
