I'm new here, so figured I'd share w/ y'all. I'm from AR and got my 1st buck with a bow last year. The bow is my dad's that hunted with 40 years ago.
One evening after work I raced home grabbed my bow and 2 arrows and got in my stand, which is about 1/2 mile from my house. It's a hang-on 20' up on top of a ridge that looked good. I had seen this deer 2 weeks earlier, had him at 22 yards, but passed on him. He was just too far for what I'm comfortable with, with this bow.
This night he came in from a different direction right at last light. When I shot he was 8 yards from the base of the tree. The shot was further back that I would of liked. Frustrated I backed out and went home and then went to dinner and drinks with the wife to take my mind off the poor shot.
At first light I went to look for him. I'm red/green color blind so looking for blood is almost pointless for me. I've got a Registered Original Mountain Cur, that I've trained to blood trail. So I started "looking" for blood, making big circles, getting worried. My dog was too busy treeing squirrels to be much good, but right when I was about to call a friend to find the blood, Buddy started barking.
I ran to where he was and sure enough, he had found it. About 100 yards from the stand. 5 yard from the gravel road.
Called a neighbor who helped me load him in the truck. And off to tag him I went.
One of my best hunting experiences ever!
