OK, thanks. Makes sense. Ran my SL5 for late season deer hunt this year, so still fiddling with it. Have a wood-burning stove on the way, so keep trying to add to the versatility and keep the weight down.

By the way, where did you end up placing your stove jack in the SL5? are you happy with the location? I will be putting mine in soon.

Thanks for the reply.

Does anyone use a siltarp to make a shelter? I was thinking of something like this for camping in the trees.

Another vote for the golite sl-5 with a seek outside nest inside plus a kifaru stove. With this set up half is like a two wall tent and the other half is open floor. Stove is optional but sure is nice in the late season!

That MountainSmith Shelter looks tempting for the price. Would be about half the weight of my current shelter, REI Half Dome 2... Might have to save up for it + a bivy.

Or you could bet a tarptent Contrail with floor and netting at the same weight and scratch the bivy.

Contrail doesn't appear to have enough room for 2 + a dog for non hunting season trips... I would like to get a bivy/ tarp setup and eventually with a mega tarp. Probably just ride out this year with the heavy tent, then pinch pennies for an extra year and get what I really want.

the mountain shelter has a larger floor area than an flycreek3 and it looks like it's larger than a megatarp (floor area) if i'm doing my math right. i didn't see a published number on the megatarp. just going by the dimentions. plus the mountain shelter is on promotive for 50 bones. at that price i can't resist. hopefully it won't be one of those pieces of gear that goes in the "wish i didn't buy" category.

Sorry, I thought you were looking for a solo shelter.

The Mountainsmith does cover some ground. Kind of a poor-man's Megatarp.

My thoughts exactly. Need room for a girlfriend and a dog, or a buddy and gear, yet still reasonably light enough to roll solo. It can't get much heavier than my existing shelter which is somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 pounds... Ouch...

The Megatarp is ~60sf ((132*68)/144 (Not quite an exact science)), where the MountainSmith is listed at 54sf, and that is counting the built in 'Annex'.

I have been considering purchasing another tent or tipi. The more I read, the harder the choice.

I am likely going alone (possible partner) and camping above 10,500 (nearest definite water I can find til I get there) to hunt mule deer. It will be Colorado, the week before MZ during Archery. Plan might include going in for three days, out to the truck, back in for three days. I have a marmot limelight 3 (42 sq ft plus 20 sq ft vestibule, 6# total). The empty frame is pictured. (I was playing around with a $30 lightweight tarp and Kifaru stove last summer)

Before I purchase a tent like a sawtooth or SL5 I would like to try this: leave my Limelight tent and take the footprint, poles, stakes and outer fly. It shold function like a floorless will save me signficant weight ... 2 - 3 #??

Question: Should I invest in a nest like those made by Bearpaw? One or two person? For bugs and such. Anyone done this with a dome type tent?

I am defianately gonna buy one of those Mountainsmith shelters. For the price it is almost hard not to try? I fully understand it might not be up to standards for the guys in the mountains for weeks on end? For me and some weekend getaways I think it might be good? Definately going to find out.

its on promotive.com you need to be eligible for a membership but if you cant get on there then altrec.com has then and you can search a 10% promo code. that's the second best price i found.

even at retail price its not too bad.

it sure is interesting to see how similar it looks to the kifaru tarps, and havent heard a thing about it until this thread......if it's decent quality you cant beat that price! i am a little surprised at how little attention these are getting, or at least appear to be getting
