I tried to do a search to see if this has been covered and I didn't come up with anything. I received a hammock for Christmas and I'm looking at getting a tarp to go with it, then a bivy is next on the purchase list. I'm not sure if I'm going to like the hammock right now so I want something that is versatile. I have been looking at Bear Paw Designs and Oware, going for a flat tarp and I think an 8' x 10' size.

Thought's? Opinions?

Thanks!

The Warbonnet Superfly is an awesome full-coverage tarp, I had one for a while before I sold most of my hammock gear. I'll bet you could rig it up closer to the ground if you wanted to use it like a tent w/o the hammock although I never tried it. I think it is cat cut so you'd have a little airflow even when pitched low but that's not always a bad thing.

If you want lightweight, check out www.Zpacks.com

Their cuben fiber tarps are legit.

This one isn't what you're looking for but it weighs 7.1 oz with stakes. I used it a bunch last year and it is great.

Nice! I like this one...

1/2 the weight and 2x the price of my other fav... ;)

My apologies for going off track.. We are diverting a bit from the original hammock question, but there are hammock options here:

Would these Zpack tarps work as a shelter to keep a meat cache cool? They seem almost translucent? In other words, not good if desiring shade. ????

Thanks for the suggestions! With so many options it is hard to choose. What about a Kifaru paratarp? Could I do a flying A Frame set up over a hammock with that or is it best suited to ground sleeping? I want something that will give me options and be versatile.

Hammock specific tarps tend to have a few features which make them less than ideal for ground sleeping. Probably better to get a general purpose tarp for occasional hanging than vice versa.

An 8 by 10 flat tarp is probably the most versatile tarp around, except maybe a 9 by 9. Lots of room for one, and in the right spot you can squeak two under it. Get one with lots of tie outs (at least two mid panel), especially on a sil tarp. Silnylon stretches when wet and thus keeping a taut pitch requires a bit more attention.

OWARE has a good reputation. Their tarps are affordable and come with plenty of tie outs. Bear Paw has good prices, but a lot of the detail pictures on the site show inadequate reinforcements and generally scary stitching. I've not seen one myself, so take that with some salt.

I had a Z packs Hexamid Plus. Super lightweight, but wasn't my cup of tea personally I'd like a bit more protection from the elements and a bit larger. It is a great option for certain but after setting it up and laying my gear out in the configuration that would have worked "best" it just wasn't for me.

I have a paratipi and while its roughly 10 oz heavier the layout is better for how I'd like to use one. Not sure it'd ever end up being my primary shelter, but more of a meat cache/bivy shelter when its just Becca and I.

Bushcraft outfitters that I posted before? Cheap and mine worked great last season....
Added them to the list...

Paratipi or a Paratarp? Paratarp is Kifaru, right? Not sure which one you meant by para tipi? Thanks!

Yeah, I wouldn't use the Hexamid for a hammock tarp.

I was thinking that one of their rectangular tarps would be ideal for that purpose.

I have a Maccat deluxe tarp that I use for hammock camping. Lightweight, easy pitch, 130" ridgeline for full length coverage, came seam-sealed, super quality, made in USA, and the owner Brian McMillan was great to deal with. I found them through asking around on some hammock forums. Zero complaints on my end.

edit to add:
They have square, rectangular, and caternary cut tarps... maybe do custom stuff as well, not sure. Mine is cat cut, so pretty much limited to a few pitches, but they work great for me.
