Should I go with the Poseidon light weight

Aegis extreme weather

Or the

Koldo rain jacket

Well, I think it all depends on your expected usage. I recently picked up a Koldo and really like it. It isn't super light weight but it also isn't insulated or really heavy. I think it will work great over a layering system and even fits well over top of my KUIU superdown jacket. Plus, it is rugged enough to be taken through brush and hold up.

Now, if you are hunting western mountains and only need a lightweight backup plan for sitting out sporadic showers then the Poseidon might be the ticket. If you are planning on weathering through freezing blizzards and monsoons then something more heavy duty might fit the bill.

wanting something for mostly western game but also something i can take to Alaska on my caribou hunt next year..

koldo is definately alaska type tough. its not ultra light but also isnt real loud. i dont have enough time in for long term durability with mine yet but i have high hopes, same with the pants. the weight of the poseidon makes it a great choice if it will spend more time in the pack than on.

I am going to try my and use the Koldo as my softshell and see how it works. Use my Merino base layers, Kratos Vest, and then this as an outer layer. It functioned very well this past weekend for that purpose.

Where are you going to hunt caribou next year? I am already starting to plan a trip up the Haul Road for next August.

Now, I just got back last weekend from Alaska and used the trip to test out some new gear including the Koldo jacket. Granted, this was just a fishing trip but still a good chance to do testing. The Koldo did well but eventually after being battered by constant rain in Valdez and having it blow in as I was driving an open boat, eventually I was soaked. To be fair, the tops of my shoulders remained dry so I cannot completely say that the Koldo failed. Overall, I am still happy with my purchase and I would definitely handle things differently if I was on a hunt instead of fishing on a boat. I definitely plan on using the Koldo next year on the North Slope.

Poseidan - lightest weight, no pit zips or pockets which means if you plan on using it as outerwear instead of just raingear then you wont have much breathability. So in my opinion the Poseidan is the best bet if all you want to use it for is raingear.

Aegis Extreme - fairly thick insulation on this one makes it ideal for stand hunting or low intensity hunts. Not being able to shed the insulation limits this jackets to cold weather only IMO.

Koldo - I went with the Koldo to use as my main outer layer. It has pitzips that help breathability and pockets. IMO, out of the three jackets that you mentioned, I think the Koldo fits best for use as an outer layer (not just raingear) and can be vented with the pitzips for more strenuous hunts or spot and stalk.

I think that with the Koldo, a puffy jacket, and the Cerdic hoodie you have a perfect layering system that can handle almost anything.

i agree with you totally but especially ^

Narrow it down between the Koldo and Posiedon. Now if weight is not an issue than go with the Koldo. It is all around a bit better jacket than the Poseidon.....pit zips, pockets, etc. Don't get me wrong the Poseidon has its place and is an awesome lightweight rain jacket. I spent 12 days in August wearing it in the Brooks Range this year on a sheep hunt and it rained 11 of those 12 days. The Posiedon performed flawlessly! One particular hike I was packing out sheep with about a 100 pound pack in the pouring rain. When it finally stopped 2 hours later, I was completely dry. Laid out the rain gear, set up camp, cooked some dinner, and before I went to bed that night the rain gear was dry. I especially like the Poseidon pants but that's a whole different topic. Hope this helps can't go wrong either way.

Running the koldo as my outer layer pretty much full time. It's been in bad bush, up alder slides chasing elk, and over mountains after goats. Very tough so far, surprisingly quite for rain gear, and I like jackets with hoods when sitting on windy ridges while glassing. I sweat a LOT, so a good base layer is needed if you're wearing it during high exertion. If too warm, it compresses reasonably well in the pack for the climb up. I'm very budget minded, and I feel I got full money's worth out of this investment.

The noise is what I worry about when trying to use it as a outer later full time. I am only a bow hunter. So I want something quitet enough when close. And using it as a outer layer seems like it may be to loud for wearing all the time

I've been bowhunting elk with it for the last 8 days. Haven't gone on a mulie bowhunt hunt yet, which will be the ultimate test. I'm confident enough to try it. In most stalks I've got enough time to strip down a layer or 2 if needed.

Don't get me wrong, it's not silent, but I also doesn't have to classic rain gear sound. I think the odds of it ruining a stalk are slim.

Ok cool. I'm going to go pick it up this week. I leave for my elk hunt next Tuesday

Well good luck. Once you get some field time with it, I'd like to see what your thoughts are on it. I'm 6' tall, 200 lbs and bought the xl for layering. I have long arms, so it fits great length wise. It is a little bulkier than I tend to wear when bowhunting, but not much. I purposely ordered it this way for late season layering. If you're ordering, hope this helps with sizing.

im just going by cabelas to pick it up.. I am 511 and 215 and i am going with the large.. Its just big enough to layer with but not to bulky.. I have short arms too so dont need extra length there
