Looking at getting my first real puffy jacket. Ive always had some cheaper off brand models that work ok for what they are. Not really going to be packing in anwhere, just day hunts from the road. Mostly be used for rifle hunting in South Dakota when i stop and glass. November can be pretty brutal here on the open plains. Any recommendations? Thanks everyone!

The SG option above at $200 is probably one of your better deals.

I think I own ~6 puffies: OR, Mountain Hardware, Feather Friends, Kuiu, SG, FlyLo.... another one that I can't think of. The Feathered Friends is the warmest and the hooded version is lighter than several other hoodless puffies with the same fill. It is quite a bit more expensive, though. The Mtn Hardware is probably the burliest/most durable.

The SG puffy is a good choice but I believe Outdoor Vitals is supposed to be coming out with a good puffy that’s supposed to be cheaper than other comparable brands. The Exo guys have been working on it with them. May want to wait and see what they come out with if you can wait. I think they said it’s been delayed until September.

I did see that last night when i was researching. Im guessing for the weight its probably not very durable?

There is always the question of how durable do you need a puffy to be. If its for hunting, then you're probably only wearing it when your stationary, around camp, in your vehicle and casually (work, around town etc). If you're going to wear it skiing, or, if you're like my ol' lady and you can wear it on hike and still be cold, you might want a burlier option.

If it's mostly for stopping and glassing from the road I wouldn't be concerned about the durability of the Grumman. I wouldn't bushwhack with it, but I pretty much only wear mine for sitting and glassing and leaning on/into rocks, trees, junipers, dirt, etc. hasn't been an issue.

Wasn't a fan of the Sitka puffy I tried but I like the Grumman enough that I paid full price for a second one after my puppy decided my first one looked tasty.

It really depends how cold you get, and also what features you want in a jacket. The Grumman wasn't quite warm enough for me, and it doesn't have a chest pocket which ended up bothering me. So I got a Rab Neutrino Pro for my true cold weather puffy.

Then I was able to find a Mountain Hardware Ghost Whisperer used for very cheap as a lightweight puffy (less warm than the Grumman). That doesn't have a chest pocket either, but for only $70 I'll deal with it

Thanks to this thread got a Grumman to replace my lost park parka. That’s a good deal on eurooptic

Huge fan of FL Uncompaghre for an all around.

If you want warm, the Under Armour Ridge Reaper is warm as is the others mentioned in here.

What did you like or dislike about the lost park parka?

Huge difference between puffies in warmth, weight, price, etc.

I have the decathlon mt100; good warmth to weight, great price, not that warm, it’s a summer or archery elk jacket.

I also the rab electron pro, which is a great jacket for late season.

The specifications you’ll want to look at are down quality (600, 800), down fill (how much down), and overall weight. Comparing those specs will give you a pretty good idea of what you are looking at.

I too have a puffy addiction ...
Last season I was very impressed with the price to weight/ warmth/quality ratio of the black ovus recon. Specifically as a late season - hunker down and glass parka.
My FL Chamberlain at 2x the price stays in the closet now

For early season, after a bunch of test jackets, my OR helium has stayed with me for 4 years

I’d probably state the model because the MH ghost whisperer is not burley by any means, but it is super light and warm for its weight

I'm a big fan of my kuiu super down pro set. I was fortunate to get the coat on sale and the pants second hand but If I had to pay full price I might look at other options.
